Joyce Welbourne Obituary

INDEPENDENCE – Joyce Elaine Welbourne, 97 years old, of Independence, Iowa, and formerly of rural Neola, Iowa, passed away Wednesday, July 16, 2025, at the Buchanan County Health Center in Independence.
A private graveside service for family was Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Grange Cemetery in Honey Creek, Iowa.
Joyce was born July 9, 1928, in Persia, Iowa, the daughter of Edwin J. and Mabel E. (Smith) Ingwersen. She attended Spring Creek Country School in rural Persia from first through eighth grade where she made many happy memories. After graduating from Persia High School in 1945, she attended Commercial Extension School in Omaha, Nebraska, and went on to work at Douglas County Abstract in Omaha.
Joyce met Dan Welbourne at a dance in Neola, and they married on August 12, 1947. Together, they raised four children - Craig, David, Mark and Lisa - on a farm west of Neola, where Joyce lived until she moved to Independence in 2014.
Joyce was a kind and caring person who touched many lives with her generous spirit and thoughtful heart. She loved visiting with family, sharing her wisdom and was happiest when surrounded by loved ones. Joyce said her children were her treasure. She wanted people to be kind– to each other, to animals and to lonely people.
She enjoyed crossword puzzles, music, reading, birds, flowers, sewing and cooking. Joyce volunteered for over twenty years at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. She was also a proud member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Mayflower Society.
She is survived by her children: Craig (Sue) Welbourne of Western Springs, Illinios; David Welbourne of Omaha; and Lisa (David) Lang of Independence; a daughter-in-law, Sue Welbourne of Neola; eleven grandchildren: Benjamin, Bridget, Rachelle, Sarah Jane, Katie, Joseph, Esther, Kevin, Kari, Kyle, and Danielle; and 21 great-grandchildren.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dan Welbourne (October 25, 1988); one son, Mark Welbourne; two brothers, Lyle Ingwersen and John Ingwersen; daughter-in-law, Edna Welbourne; and one grandson, Keith.
Memorial may be directed to the family to be given to organizations important to Joyce.
