INDEPENDENCE – Michael "Mike" C. Fischels, 87, of Independence, Iowa, died on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Lexington Estate in Independence.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, at St. John's Catholic Church, Independence. Burial will be held at St. John's Cemetery in Independence. Visitation will be held an hour before the service on Wednesday. The Reiff Family Center – Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the family with arrangements.
Mike was born on August 31, 1937, in Independence, the son of Michael M. and Katherine A. (Bovy) Fischels. In 1956, he graduated from St. John Catholic High School in Independence and became a milk hauler for the Wapsie Valley Creamery in Independence. Mike married Norma Jean Wagner at St. Athanasius Catholic Church in Jesup, Iowa, on August 27, 1958. The couple purchased a farm south of Independence, where they milked cows and started their family. Mike then worked at Corn Blossom in Independence, and later as a distributor for Mac Tools. Mike finally retired in 1997 after working for many years as a field representative for Wapsie Valley Creamery. After retirement, Mike and Norma enjoyed traveling in their RV, enjoying many winter trips to Nevada and Arizona. They made sure they were there for their family. They loved following their grandchildren's sports and supported all of their adventures in life.
He is survived by his five children: Deb (Craig) Conklin of Aiken, S.C.; Linda (Wayne) Hosch, Walker; Roger (Lisa) Fischels, Tom (Toni) Fischels, and Brian Fischels, all of Independence; ten grandchildren: Nikki (Jed) Alexander, Kyle (Leah) Hosch, Holli (Dustin) Osvald, Keaton (Kristy), Kenyon (Lydia Butters), and Kaylee (Tyler Glenski) Hosch; Ali (Jake) Collins, Brad (Lauren) Conklin, Jasmine (Seth) Ebling, and Michael (Abby) Fischels; seventeen great-grandchildren: Kipton and Mila Alexander, Josie and Izzie Hosch, Baylor and Briggs Osvald, Karter, Kamdyn, Kollins and Kyler Hosch, Cruz and Kenzi Collins, Asher and Hayden Conklin, Emryn and Maylie Ebling, and Taydem Fischels. Also surviving is a sister-in-law, Gertrude Fischels.
Mike is preceded in death by his parents, Michael and Katherine Fischels, his wife, Norma Fischels in 2015; four sisters: Agnes Holbach, Dorothy Connolly, Lucille Hogan, Leona Sebetka, and Virginia McElroy; and five brothers: Lawrence, Vince, Jerry, and Louis Fischels.
