DANIEL RYAN Obituary

DANIEL RYAN SR. BURLINGTON - Daniel Ryan Sr., lifelong New York Yankee fan and proud Irishman, passed away on Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, after a brief illness, with his family by his side. Born in Burlington, the oldest of six children to Harold and Mary Ryan, Dan spent his early years on Lakeview Terrace. His very first job, at 12 years old, was making sauerkraut at Kieslich's Market. Dan graduated from Cathedral High School in 1947 and went on to serve his country in the Korean Conflict. Dan always possessed a strong work ethic, and was known to work as many as three jobs at a time. He was employed by Collins Dairy and Grand Union Supermarket, but his career was spent as a security guard at General Electric, and subsequently Martin Marietta and General Dynamics. He retired in 2001 and went on to truly enjoy his retirement golfing, bowling, attending sporting events (especially those his grandsons participated in), assembling complicated puzzles and going to the beach. He spent his mornings with his pals at McDonald's drinking coffee while debating politics and sports; and enjoyed Happy Hour Fridays at the Elks Club with family and friends. Dan also enjoyed his yearly pilgrimage to Saratoga to see the ponies run. A great believer in giving back to his community, Dan volunteered for many years at Ethan Allen Homestead, Meals on Wheels, and the Military Museum at Ft. Ethan Allen. He was a member of many local civic clubs and served as an officer at the BPOE "Elks "Club in Burlington. Dan was a man of great faith. The Catholic Church was integral to his life and a tremendous source of comfort and strength. He was also proud of his Irish heritage. Dan never met a man (or lady) that he didn't like and leaves many friends behind. He loved his class reunions for Cathedral High and was looking forward to attending this year's reunion. He was very proud of his family and leaves behind his sons, Daniel Ryan Jr. (wife, Lisa Rosen Ryan) and Martin Ryan. As well, he leaves his much loved grandsons, Owen, Connor and Braden; sisters, Catherine McEnrue, Mary Howells and Margaret Douglas (husband, Walter); brother, John Ryan (wife, Claire); and his very special friend, Rena Bevins. He also leaves many cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Tom Ryan; second wife, Ann Petrie Ryan; best friend, Jimmy McEnrue; and his mother-in-law, Mary Niles. Dan was often heard to say, "A really good day was a day when the Yankees won." Visiting hours will be held on Monday, Sept. 9, 2013, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ready Funeral Home South Chapel, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, Sept. 10, 2013, at St. Marks Church, North Avenue, Burlington.

Another summer Dan and Marty remembering my wonderful cousin, your dad. When Danny graduated high school, I was 5 years old. My mother, Aunt Geraldine took us, the Barry kid , to Vermont, telling us of how important it was to know who your cousins were and to keep in touch with them for the rest of your life. Although we don“t get to see you as often as we would like, went we do, those happy gone by days, come flooding back. They captured our thoughts and warm our hearts. Love you guys!

It doesn't seem possible you have been gone 8 years. I remember the many wonderful summers in Burlington with you and all my cousins. Lake View Terrace and Lake Champlain were the places where we spent many happy hours together. My brothers and I often speak of the fun times. Your care and kindness toward us is a fond memory. Still miss you.

Always known as Grandpa Dan to our children, they spoke of him highly and remembered the fun times staying with him and Ann in the summers of their childhood. There wasn't a person he met that didn't love him for who he was. In our eyes he was truly an ambassador to all in Burlington and was very much loved by everyone in the family. Dan always had a smile especially when the Yankees came up in conversation. But he always saved his biggest smile for his second wife Ann. Dan never stopped talking about her after her passing. Now may God hold Dan by the hand to once again reunite him with the love of his life. We are truly thankful we had the opportunity to know Dan, it was a true blessing in deed. God bless you Dan Ryan.

I fondly remember Dan for the happiness and care that he gave my mom during their brief time together and the memories my children have of spending time with "Grandpa Dan". I am saddened by not knowing sooner to have been able to pay my respects. Dan will always have a place in my heart and in my memories for the kind man he was.

Marty, Danny and the Ryan Family;

Dan Ryan touched the lives of so many people. He truly cared about everyone he met and unselfishly gave his time and talents to helping others. Some of my fondest childhood memories were riding in the back of his Mustang convertible on our many trips to the lake. Dan was one of my mom (Barb's) favorites; and Dan was so generous and loving to her. God bless you all through your grieving process. Love, Peg

Dear Ryan Family,
I am sorry for your loss. Dan had many friends, and I am glad he thought of me as one of them. I was surprised to run into him just a couple weeks ago at our Dr appointment but great to visit and catch up. I didn't know it would be my last chance to see him, but his smile and twinkling eyes I can still see now when I think of him. I will remember him in my prayers and hope your family finds comfort in knowing how many people loved and cared about him.
