Edward Worthen Obituary

Dr. Edward H. Worthen

Age: 86 • South Hero

Dr. Edward H. Worthen, a longtime resident of South Hero, Vermont, passed away on Wednesday, December 28, 2016, at the VNA Respite House in Colchester, Vermont, at the age of 86. Born on February 15, 1930 in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts to Charles Kimball Worthen and Laura Alice Petty Worthen, he spent his early childhood in Burlington, Vermont at the home of his grandfather, Edward D. Worthen, a vice-president of the Chittenden County Trust Company. From 1934 until 1946 he lived in Amsterdam and Schenectady, New York. He was a 1947 graduate of Baldwin High School in Birmingham, Michigan. In 1951 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan in Latin American Studies, followed by an M.A. degree in 1953 and the Ph.D. in Spanish in 1965. His dissertation, The Reconquest of Mexico: A Panoramic View of Mexican Literary Nationalism, is considered a definitive study in the field. Dr. Worthen's forty-year career in education, begun as a Teaching Fellow at the University of Michigan in 1953, included positions at Williams, Middlebury, and St. Michael's colleges. From 1970 until his retirement in 1993 he was an associate professor of Latin American Studies and Spanish at SUNY-Plattsburgh. Dr. Worthen was the author of a number of published scholarly essays and a biography of his great-grandfather, the Reverend McKendree Petty, Methodist clergyman and Professor of Mathematics at the University of Vermont. His last work, Tales from the Point, is the history of Kibbe Point in South Hero, Vermont, where he lived for most of his life. He was a member of the Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Delta Pi, and a patron of several historical, charitable, and cultural organizations. Eduardo, as he signed his annual holiday letter, was a man of deep intellect and strong opinions. He was warm, caring, humorous, and generous. Nothing pleased him more than an evening with friends at McKee's Pub or Shore Acres, accompanied by a gin martini, dirty and straight up. Ed was so particular about his martinis that he carried the recipe in his wallet to educate uninformed bartenders. It was common for Ed to pay the dinner bill (anonymously, of course) of a neighboring table and if you joined Ed for a meal you were always his guest. Ed was as proud to be a Schenectadian as he was to be a Methodist. He cherished his years in Ann Arbor and Mexico City, but it was his beloved home, the Birches, on Keeler's Bay where he found the most comfort, alternating the seasons between his summer and winter cottages. In addition to his many friends and neighbors in Vermont, Dr. Worthen leaves numerous friends in Mexico, for over half a century his "second home," as well as in England, Canada, and throughout the United States. He is survived by several cousins. He was predeceased by his beloved cats, Natalie, Sam and Will, and on September 29, 2007, by his dearest friend, Dr. Patricia A. Powers. Burial at her side will be in a private ceremony at Lakeview Cemetery, Burlington, Vermont. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, January 4, from 2 to 4 P.M. at the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Chapel, 9 Pleasant Street in Essex Junction. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the South Hero Community Library, 75 South Street, South Hero, VT, 05486, or to the McLure-Miller VNA Respite House, c/o VNA of Chittenden and Grand Isle Counties, 1110 Prim Road, Colchester, VT, 05446.

I was a very frightened Colombian student at Middlebury College from sep 1966 till jun 1968. It was my first time away from home. I've always remembered Dr. Worthen as a very kind man. I learned a lot in his Spanish Literature classes. I could tell that he loved Mexico and enjoyed visiting there every time he had a chance. For many years I tried to get in touch with him with no luck. I want to thank him for being one of the nicest persons I met during my very hard two years at Middlebury. RIP Dr. Worthen. Someone in Colombia remembers you well.

I am greatly saddened to hear of the loss of Ed Worthen. My visits with him over the last 25 years were always a delight, for there was no topic that Ed could not speak of. His love for the history of his family and his ability to make them and the events they were associated with come alive in conversation were an inspiration and a joy to listen too. He will be greatly missed.

Cousin Ed was a kind and gentle man and I have fond memories of his visits to MN when I was child. I would be so thrilled when we would go for a Sunday visit at Grandma Petty's and Cousin Ed was there! My last visit with Cousin Ed was when he was completing the McKendree biography-- he had came to MN for one last photo. We had a pleasant visit over lunch, and he mentioned he could use a new pair of walking shoes. After lunch we went to MOA. It was quite an afternoon adventure... Cousin Ed got a new pair of walking shoes but not at MOA. My husband and I still get a chuckle from "the shoe adventure".

My strongest memory of Ed was when I was fortunate enough to spend almost two weeks with him in Mexico, in 1971 while he was working on cataloging American cemeteries in Mexico City (I think that is right). I still believe I learned more Spanish in those two weeks than in 2 years of college level Spanish. Being my mother's cousin, we weren't sure how we were related, so he was my tio/primo (uncle/cousin) and I was his sobrino/primo (nephew/cousin). We looked forward to his Christmas cards each year. He will be greatly missed.

Ed was an important part of our family for many years. He made our mother Patricia so happy, as her constant friend and companion. They shared a common love for cats, worldly explorations, and the NYT Sunday Crossword Puzzle. Eduardo, we'll miss you!

Ed Worthen gave so much to the world -- to his family, friends, students and communities here and abroad. There will never be another like him. The Petty family are especially grateful that Ed devoted his formidable research and writing skills so lovingly to "McKendree," his history of the Petty and related families. This book is a permanent treasure. We will long remember happy times spent with Ed in Michigan, Massachusetts, Mexico, and his beloved home state of Vermont.

With deepest sympathy for the loss of Ed Worthen. He was a remarkable character and friend better known as Uncle Ed to my family over the years. As an excellent university scholar and teacher, he provided a never ending flow of insights, special connections, and generous support. He lived a one-of-a-kind life that connected Massachusetts, Schenectady, Mexico, Ann Arbor, Burlington and the Birches on Kibbe Point in a magical sense of place. Ed will live in our hearts and minds forever.

I never met Dr. Worthen in person, but he telephoned me about 14 years ago, when he was writing the biography of his ancestor McKendree Petty, mentioned in the obituary. (I had written a page or two on McKendree Petty in a history of the UVM Mathematics Department.) In May 2004, he sent me a beautiful signed and bound copy of the finished work. It was very well done. My condolences and best wishes to his family and friends
