GEORGE HATGEN Obituary

GEORGE P. (HATJIGIANNIS) HATGEN - BURLINGTON - On March 27, 2015, surrounded by his family and beloved dog, Oliver, George P. Hatgen, 92, left this earth and was reunited with his wife, Mary. George was born in Galaxidi, Greece, on Oct. 17, 1922. He was one of the founding fathers of the Dormition of the Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church in Burlington, as well as a founding father and lifelong member of AHEPA and a longtime member of the Board of Trustees of the Greek Orthodox Church. His love and enthusiasm for all church activities shine brightly as he was labeled "top chef" for the parish community. Through the years, George worked for numerous restaurants. He eventually became the first co-owner of the Burlington Airport Restaurant, later co-owner of the Acropolis Restaurant, and while he is no longer operating he continues to own the Parkway Diner in South Burlington. His love for cooking was only surpassed by his love for his family. He is survived by his son, Peter; grandchildren, Maria and Timothy; several nephews; and his loving dog, Oliver. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 31, 2015, at 11 a.m. at the Dormition of the Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church, 600 S. Willard St., Burlington. Interment will follow in the family lot in Lakeview Cemetery. Visitations will be held today, Monday, March 30, 2015, from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Corbin and Palmer Funeral Home, 9 Pleasant St., Essex Junction. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dormition of the Mother of God Greek Orthodox Church, 600 S. Willard St., PO Box 8122, Burlington, VT 05402-8122.

We will always remember George for his hard work and the support to every church project. The numerous discussions we had about his hometown in Greece, but most of all his pride and love for his family. May his memory be eternal

Peter: So sorry to see of your dad's passing. I so remember him back in the early-late 1980's when Tammy and Gail worked there. Your Dad was always good to my Mom when she'd come alone...and let her sit in a booth. This would be at the Parkway. I remember you also.. helping out at the grill and your great sense of humor. My husband was a police officer from Williston...and he'd usually sit with a couple of the State Troopers who stopped at the Parkway very often. Your Dad like yourself and all your employees were so good to everyone. He'll truly be missed.
