HAROLD BOUTILIER Obituary

HAROLD BOUTILIER BURLINGTON - Harold Gregg Boutilier passed away peacefully on June 4, 2010 at the age of 96. He was the founder of Boutilier's Art store, a fixture in the downtown Burlington area for over 40 years. He helped and encouraged many struggling artists through the years, as well as providing the tools and products they needed to pursue their craft. Hal was a musician, woodworker, beer brewer, gardener, bread baker and avid reader. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lea, whom he met and married in Belgium towards the end of World War II, when he was a Master Sargent in the Army. He was the last of four brothers, Ken, Paul, and Don. He leaves behind a very large and thriving family that will miss him greatly.

I was an art student at UVM back in the 1970s and bought what supplies I could afford at Boutliers. Mr. Boutlier (Hal) was so helpful to me as to my choices of supplies, gave me art advice and even discounts if I didn't have exactly enough cash.

I continued to do business with him for many years to follow. I am now age 63 but still remember his kindness and wealth of knowledge about art and the supplies. He always steered me in the right direction. He was a wonderful and helpful man who will be missed in the Burlington area.

I knew Hal from 1970, mainly from contact in the store. But his employees were always happy and comfortable there, reflecting a considerate boss. They liked him, and I did, too.
