HENRY PHELPS Obituary

DR. HENRY BEVERIDGE PHELPS - OCALA, Fla. - Dr. Henry Beveridge Phelps, 81, died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2011, in Ocala, Fla., following a brief illness. Born in Cambridge, Mass., he was the son of Gordon W. Phelps and Ruth Phelps of Stanford, Vt. He graduated from Loomis Academy and Lafayette College before earning his PhD in Psychology at Columbia University. After serving in the U.S. Army he moved to Burlington and was appointed Director of Clinical Psychology for the Howard Family Services Center. He went on to teach Psychology at Castleton State Teacher's College where he was a dynamic and beloved professor. He retired from teaching as Chairman of the Psychology Department and went on to explore his love for cuttingedge-technology by the launching the first Apple Computer retail store in the state of Vermont. Dr. Phelps, an engineer at heart, spent much of his free time in his wood shop, soldiering circuit boards, studying technical stock charts and building a family clay tennis court. He also played football in high school and college and enjoyed tennis, skiing, golf, bridge and black-jack. A brilliant and empathetic therapist, Dr. Phelps specialized in phobias and cognitive therapy. Always the scientist, his methods were empirical, rational and compassionate. This is how he helped his patients, taught his students, and lived his life. His quiet and calm demeanor characterized how "Bev" was known in his communities. He leaves behind four children, Anne Hamilton, David Phelps, Douglas Phelps and Carlton Phelps; six grandchildren, Molly Hamilton, Hunter Phelps, Taylor Phelps, Elizabeth Phelps, Evan Phelps and Lilith Phelps; his former wife of 36 years, Betty Phelps; and longtime companion, Francis Kennedy. Dr. Phelps was cremated at Roberts Funeral Home in Dunnellon, Fla.
