HUGH MCKENNY Obituary

HUGH THOMPSON "TOM" MCKENNY - COLCHESTER - Mr. Hugh Thompson "Tom" Mckenny, 81, of Colchester, died on Thursday, Feb. 12, 2015, in the University of Vermont Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family, following a long illness. Tom is survived by his wife of 53 years, Laurette (Bisson) Mckenny; sons, Hugh David and wife, Karen, Christopher, and Daniel; daughter, Heather Mckenny and husband, James Daniel Abbe; four grandchildren, Katherine, Hugh and Alexander Mckenny, and Caroline Abbe; and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. He was predeceased by his brother, Robert A. Mckenny. Born in Philadelphia, Pa., on May 7, 1933, Tom was the son of the late Arthur and Helen (Thompson) Mckenny. He married Laurette Bisson in 1960, and established a home in Colchester. Tom served in the USAF 1953-1956, including an event-filled time stationed at Lajes Field in the Azores, and setting up the first AFRTS television station in Limestone, Maine, in 1954. Tom enjoyed a long and remarkable career as a radio, broadcast and audio engineer. This started in 1952, when he was hired to work for Universal Broadcasting in Boston, Mass. This continued for decades as he worked with many radio and television stations in the New England area as a consulting or field engineer, including time as Chief Engineer for WJOY and WTSA. Tom became the owner/operator of Broadcast Engineering Services in 1962, using his skills to provide professional audio systems, sound reinforcement and recording expertise to many notable clients over the past 53 years. He was particularly proud of work he did for Keith Jarrett, Paul Winter, Lyric Theater, the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, Vermont Mozart Festival, and the Flynn Center for Performing Arts. Throughout his career, he earned many lifetime awards and recognitions, including the 1983 Distinguished Service Award from the VT Council of the Arts for supporting VT artists. Tom was a founding member of Local 919, the Vermont chapter of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees and an honorary lifetime member of that organization. A fixture on the local music scene, Tom was an amazing story teller. Right up to the end he enjoyed sharing his adventures with family and friends. His stories covered the gamut from remote radio broadcasts during Eisenhower's 1952 presidential run, filming Nikita Khrushchev's visit to an Iowa cornfield for the armed services, touring the Soviet Union with the Paul Winter Consort, and providing sound for Jim Henson's memorial service in New York's Cathedral of Saint John the Divine, as well as the many adventures and misadventures of a full and rich life. Tom also enjoyed exploring and sharing his family's history. Visiting hours are scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 22, 2015, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Ready Funeral Home, 261 Shelburne Rd., Burlington. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Tom's life. Arrangements are in the care of Ready Funeral & Cremation Service, South Chapel. To send online condolences please visit www.readyfuneral.com. I remember going up to Tom's house to rent some gear. He took me overto his barn and swung open the doors. Whoa! That guy had some audio gear. All of it in perfect working condition. He took the time to show me around. Then he went over to his safe and pulled out his scrapbook. I rolled my eyes to myself. Then he showed it to me and told me in great detail about all the technical setups for each event. I was in a geek fraternal bliss . I learned a lot from Tom in what turned out to be a two hour visit. I also made a friend. I'll never forget that day or the man.

I was sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I "worked" with Tom in Lyric Theatre on several shows that he was sound designer/engineer and I was stage-manager. He was always great to work with. He will be missed. May the love of friends and family carry you through your grief.

Lollie and the entire McKenny clan, I am so saddened to hear of Tom's passing. I recall with great fondness the times we spent together doing sound reinforcement jobs and of course his technical assistance while I was a DJ. Tom taught me so much about the art of good quality sound, and he always did it in a kind, gentle manner. Tom was a gentleman, and I know he is missed by many. My sincere condolences you the McKenny family.

"TEST .. TEST TEST TESTING 1234 Sounds good to me! Give it a try, stand where you're going to stand and don't touch the mic, I get the mics all set up and somebody always has to put their hands on them". !" 'Got it Tom, You're da man!
Memories, of conversions continue to go thru my head of my many years of days spent with this wonderful man, A gentle giant I affectionally called "Tom Terrific" So many visits to Camp Kiniya Road seeing Tom about the latest sound equipment he would suggest I should invest in. Lolly, Dan, David, and Heather thank you all for your patience the many hours I interrupted your family life. Thank goodness Lolly you could stay busy with your many beautiful bonsai trees. Every visit was a treat listening to Tom relate experiences he had over the many years on the road all thru-out the world with the musicians he provided sound for, as he attended to my sound system set up or problem. Tom was a life saver to so many of us in the musical field. His knowledge of sound reinforcement, professionalism and attention to detail to make it neat and complete will never be duplicated. Tears stream down my face now as I write this and come to grips with ..IT'S OVER! No more phone calls to 893 2278 to hear Lolly say "Oh Hi Larry, Tom's outside loading a trailer", or "Yes he's here, TOMMMM! Larry's on the phone!". Even with all the road trips and late nights getting home Tom still found the time to be a supportive parent, appreciative, loving husband for Lolly's work as a mother and with help with his gigs and for the ones she did by her self at St. Michaels., and in later years a caring grandfather. Since 1981 Tom Terrific has been LBJ's life line for keeping the music playing. He'll be missed by me and by all that knew him, "BIG TIME" and his smile and distinctive laugh will be fondly remembered LONG TIME!
I just can't get over he is really gone. Our loss is Gods gain. Can I get an AMEN to that? P.S. Hope you don't need your glasses up there, Big Guy!. HUGS !!! LBJ

I was so sorry to hear of Tom's passing and it immediately brought me back to the time we spent together at Hunt's, when he provided the sound system for every national touring show we presented, from 1977 1983. Tom was the consummate professional and a true gentleman. When I posted a link to his obituary on Facebook, many local musicians wrote heartfelt comments that echoed those sentiments, and noted what a joy he was to work with. Tom treated everyone with such respect. He was so even tempered and nothing seemed to rattle him. Tom worked well over 200 shows at Hunt's during those six years. On a typical day he would load in during the afternoon, work the sound check and two shows, and then pack everything up twelve hours later, long after the musicians had cleared the stage and left the bar. Unless it was a Jim Ringer/Mary McCaslin or Jerry Jeff Walker show. No one left the bar after Jim or Jerry Jeff. For many of those shows his wife Lolly worked side by side with him, hauling cases into the trailer at two in the morning, before driving home to Colchester. All of us at Hunt's were very fortunate to have had the opportunity to work with Tom over those years. He was certainly a large part of what made the club a very special place for music. I am sorry that a business commitment out of town will preclude me from being with you on Sunday to celebrate Tom's wonderful life. My thoughts will be with all of you. With best regards, Chico Lager

I was so saddened to hear about Tom. My heart goes out to Lolly, Heather, David, and the rest of Tom's family.

I had the very good fortune of spending a great deal of time working, and traveling with Tom, starting with the early Keith Jarrett concerts in the seventies, and continuing for many years after. I was new to the business at the time, and was fortunate enough to have Tom take me under his wing. We were usually traveling by car, so I spent many an hour being entertained by Tom's stories about this new career that I was so excited about myself. The miles seemed to fly by as we drove up and down the East Coast in his yellow Mercedes, and Tom recounted one amazing experience after another. He was definitely the real deal.

Years later, I find myself passing along many of those stories, as well as some of vast amount of information that I gleaned from my time with Tom, whether I am teaching an audio seminar, or an Audio 1 college class.

The last time that I saw Tom was about two and 1/2 years ago, when I ran into him at the Mercedes dealership in the middle of the day. He was incredibly upbeat and excited about the things that he was doing in his retirement, and ran out to his car to fetch a scrapbook that he had been working on. We stood at the service desk and looked through this book for what seemed like an hour. Thirty five years after meeting Tom, I found myself once again amazed by the depth of his knowledge and experience, as we looked through old pictures, and articles from his past. I am so grateful to have had that isolated moment with Tom as a lasting memory of someone who had a big influence on my life.

Thank you Tom. I will really miss you.
