JANET PAGE Obituary

JANET C. PAGE - BURLINGTON - Janet C. Page, 87, of Colchester, died Saturday, March 7, 2015, in the UVM Medical Center, following a brief illness. Her final hours were peaceful, comfortable, and spent with her family. Janet was born June 24, 1927, in Burlington, the second of four daughters of Theron and Anne (Putnam) Clark. She attended Burlington schools, spending parts of summers with her three sisters in South Hero. As a teenager during W.W.II she was a volunteer civilian aircraft spotter. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1945 and from Syracuse University in 1949 with a double degree in home economics and journalism. She married Guy M. Page Jr. of Burlington on her 23rd birthday, June 24, 1950, in Burlington. They lived in New Haven, Conn., while Guy completed law school, and then returned to Burlington, where their five children were born. In 1960, the family moved to their newly-built home on Malletts Head, where Janet lived the rest of her life. Janet was an active school volunteer, Scout mom, talented sketch artist, enthusiastic player of the cello, flute, alto recorder, and piano. She sang for more than two decades in the choir at the First Unitarian Universalist Church. She and Guy were active boaters and hikers. The family took road trips long and short in their VW microbus, often singing folk songs to make the trip go faster. An English teacher's daughter, she read good books aloud to her children and barely tolerated the presence of one small, portable black and white television. She was a devoted caregiver for her husband during his illness and a much-loved P.E.O. sister. For many years she managed the art supply department at the UVM bookstore. Her life quietly nurtured in her children a love for learning, hard work, music, travel, family, the outdoors, and other people. She was cheerful, kind, tactful, and enthusiastic, quick to help others and slow to accept praise. She is survived by five children, Joel Page and wife, Donna Dupray, of Jeffersonville, John Page and wife, Becky Bowen, of Montpelier, Daniel Page and wife, Kirsi Savusalo, of West Newton, Mass., Guy Page and wife, Colette Page, of Barre, and Sarah Page and husband, Myles Danaher, of Brattleboro; 12 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Aaron, Molly, Amos, Matias, Johannes, Nikolas, Timothy, Joseph, and Imani Page, and Claire and Katherine Danaher; two sisters, Jean Weaver and Joan Lang, both of Burlington; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Page Weinrich of Edenton, N.C. Janet's husband, Guy; sister, Jane Brown of South Burlington; and grandson, Benjamin Israel Page, predeceased her. A memorial service, with coffee in the parlors to follow, will be held 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015, at the First Unitarian-Universalist Society, 152 Pearl St., Burlington. Interment will be at the wishes of the family. Donations in her memory will be gratefully accepted by the Green Mountain Club, www.greenmountainclub.org, 4711 Waterbury-Stowe Rd., Waterbury Center, VT 05677; or the American Parkinson Disease Association - Vermont Chapter, www.parkinsonsvt.org, University of Vermont Medical Center, Department of Neurology, 1 South Prospect St., Burlington, VT 05401.

To All of the Page clan: Aunt Jan was always so fun to be around, she always encouraged us kids to have fun in the lake and up in Underhill. I have fond memories of spending the night at the Mallett Head house with her and all of my cousins. She was one of the people that turned me onto the Recorder. We played several duets together. I also remember admiring the sisters as they headed out to yet another kayak trip. I love you all. She will be missed.

Just a note of condolence to Jan's children. I was one of your babysitters. I enjoyed knowing both your mother and father and even your G-ma Ann Clark. I lived right behind your home on Mansfield Ave. Even spending one summer at the Island home.

Joel and Family, What an amazing person your Mom was. She had the zest for life of someone 20 years younger. It was always a pleasure to see her and share her enthusiasm. She was also intensely proud of you whenever I mentioned your name. How lucky all the Page children and grandchildren are to have Janet as a mother/grandmother. She will be sorely missed but what a great life she had. My best to the entire family.

I am so sorry to hear about Jan. She was so kind to me when I lived on Malletts Head. You could see her walking all the trails of old Marble Island. She made an almost daily climb to the top with a glorious vies of the lake with her ski pole and her dog Sammy. I will miss her charm and wonderful hospitality. Bunny Barry Cocoa Beach FL

I am so shocked to read of Jan's passing. I have so many wonderful memories of your mother. We had so much fun with our G.S. troop. I so needed her, else I would get lost in the woods. Then there was sailing, ice-boating, skating on the Bay. She so loved the out-doors, every season. My thoughts and prayers are with you.
