Martha Sullivan Obituary
Salisbury - Martha Jane Sullivan, 79, died unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at Porter Medical Center in Middlebury.
Ms. Sullivan was born in Middlebury on August 8, 1939 to her parents- Harry and Lois (Kelsey) Sullivan. Martha grew up on the family farm in Salisbury, received her early education in Salisbury,and graduated from Middlebury High School.
She earned her B.S. at the University of Wyoming and spent several years teaching in that state and Milwaukee, WI before returning to Vermont.
Martha was a long-time dispatcher for the Vermont State Police, Middlebury Barracks. Many will also remember her as a member of The Tax Team in Middlebury, her attention to detail, and her humor.
Martha was predeceased by her parents and two sisters: Noreen Conant and Julie Dawson. Survivors include her sister, Mary Anne Sullivan, and her brother Michael Sullivan, both of Salisbury. Also: her nephew Joe Conant of Salisbury, nieces; Shaune, Nikki, and Stephanie Conant of Medford MA, and nieces Valerie (Dawson) Simpson of Middlebury and Sarah Dawson of Fort Lauderdale, FL, Marlene Thompson of Ripton,Melissa Many of Salisbury, Shelley Sullivan of Starksboro and Monica Garthafner of Addison.
Ms. Sullivan served her native town in a variety of offices: auditor, lister, 911 coordinator, chair of Salisbury Historical Society and chair of the cemetery committee. At the time of her death, she was serving as Chair of the Salisbury Select Board.
When any resident had a question about the history of the town or the workings of municipal government, they would immediately contact Martha.
Martha had a lifelong love of animals, and many passersby on Rte 7 would stop to photograph or pet her beloved donkeys.
A private graveside committal service and burial will take place, at a later date, in the West Side Cemetery in Salisbury.
Memorial gifts in lieu of flowers may be made in her memory to the: Salisbury Historical Society, 25 Schoolhouse Rd, Salisbury VT 05769.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Miller & Ketcham Funeral Home in Brandon.

We are so sad to hear about the loss of Martha in our lives. She was such a special person -much more than our tax preparer. We looked forward to seeing Martha every year. Our deepest condolences to Martha's family and friends. She will be so very missed.

I worked with Martha for years. As a young State Trooper, she looked out for me and everybody else there. When my son ( a soldier) was killed, Martha sent us a card. She explained that when her mom was dying, she was afraid that she wouldn't know where to go when she passed. Martha told her, Just look for the young soldier with a great smile, he'll help you. I hope he helps you too Martha. Farewell. DY
