NELLIE JAQUES Obituary

NELLIE (HASKINS) JAQUES - HUNTINGTON - Nellie (Haskins) Jaques passed away in the Vermont Respite House on June 19, 2014. She was born Aug. 28, 1930, on a mountainside in Starksboro, to Peter and Nina Haskins. She spent her childhood living there on the family farm. She then lived with Peg Francis and her family in Hinesburg while attending Hinesburg High School. They remained lifetime friends. In 1949, she married Gene Jaques. They were always together and "on the go." They owned and operated Jaques Country Store and Norton Farms. In the spring they made maple syrup, and on Saturday nights in the summer it was exciting running Jaques Barn (later named Maple Ridge Danceland); a BYOB dancehall. When they were not working, they were out having fun including bowling leagues and races at Catamount Stadium and Thunder Road. They also traveled to New York City, visited family in Florida, and enjoyed a trip to Hawaii. Gene predeceased her after 43 years of marriage. Nellie was a lifelong caregiver. She raised three children and continued to care for her son, Jeffry. She also cared for her father-in-law, PC Jaques, in his declining years, her brother, Ray, and later her husband, Gene, after suffering strokes. She loved unconditionally and gave her heart and love without hesitation. Besides working in the store, keeping books for the farm, and caring for her family, she was the Huntington Town Clerk and Town Treasurer for many years. Later, she was a town auditor. She was awarded the Olga Hallock Civic Award in 2003. We will always remember her for her sense of humor and adventure, and that she always put everyone else first. She was a Yankee's fan and enjoyed watching baseball on TV. She loved spending time with her family and connecting on the phone with distant relatives and friends. She looked forward to Wednesday pasta nights, and celebrating birthdays and holidays with family. She also enjoyed "being on the road," whether it was going out to eat, shopping or just going for a ride. She traveled with both her granddaughters driving across the country, exploring the West and adventuring up north to Alaska. She leaves her daughters and their husbands, Sandy Fish and husband, Jim Fish, and Diane Barron and husband, Steve Barron; her dear son, Jeffry Jaques; grand- children, Heather Weston, Jesse Barron and wife, Brenda, and Heidi (Weston) Williams and husband, Peter; granddaughter-in-law, Kathy Barron; and great-grandchildren, Sarah Barron, Morgan Cross, Emilee Barron, Miya Cross, and Aaliyah Williams. She also leaves her sister, Belle Senecal; sisters-in-law, Beverly Haskins, and Lorraine Jones and husband, Hilton Jones; several nieces and nephews, including niece, Pat Haskins, whom she especially enjoyed going on adventures with, such as lunches and shopping; and her cat, April, and pug, Susie, who were great companions to her. She was predeceased by her brothers, Wade Haskins, Heman Haskins, and Ray Haskins; sister, Estella Rivers; sisters-in-law and a son-in-law. We wish to thank her caregivers over the last year and a half. You made it possible for her to be home and continue to "run the roads." The family also wishes to thank the Vermont Respite House for their compassionate care of Nellie and all the caring support to the family in her final days. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at 11 a.m. in the Huntington Community Church, 4910 Main Road Huntington. Visiting hours will be held on Monday, June 23, 2013, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Gifford Funeral Home and Cremation Service, 22 Depot St., Richmond. Memorial contributions in her memory may be made to the Vermont Respite House, 99 Allenbrook Lane, Williston, VT 05495.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of Nellie Jaques. We have many fond memories of going to Jaques store and Nellie would be so kind and sociable, especially to our young son. There is another star in Heaven, but a void left here on Earth. RIP Nellie.
