Philip Schelzo Obituary

Philip Joseph Schelzo

"Phil", born on November 17, 1932 in New York City passed away on December 24, 2020. Phil grew up in The Big Apple, youngest son of Joseph and Lillian, little brother to sisters Virginia, Eleanor, and Raffaele. A graduate of technical High School in NYC he served four years in the US Navy aboard the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt and the USS Zalema. While stationed in Brooklyn he met future wife Patricia Hammond of Vermont, who also was serving in the Navy. They were married on June 20, 1959 and settled down in Vermont's metropolis, Burlington. In 1966 they moved one final time, to Colchester-where they raised two Sons. "Patty" pre-deceased Phil in 2019.

Phil worked for 30 years at the Hood Milk Plant in Burlington. After retiring from there in the 90s, he found a second career serving as the clubhouse manager of the Vermont Expos/Lake Monsters for 20 summers. It became a boyhood dream come true as he was always an exceptional athlete and a lover of baseball-including pitching for the Vermont Seniors League into his 60s. Being part of the Vermont team allowed him to have experiences like chatting with Billy Bean in the Centennial Grandstand (where he pointed out he looked nothing like Brad Pitt), chewing the fat with Harold Reynolds in the Brooklyn Cyclones' dugout and singing God Bless America at the Tri-City ValleyCats' salute to veterans. Most of all he enjoyed the comradery of being with young ball players at the start of their careers and the atmosphere of the ball park.

He is survived by his sons- Joe, a high school government teacher in Manassas, VA and Vincent, a retired police officer in Tempe, AZ , granddaughter Courtney, her husband Jose and great grandchildren Elena and Owen. A sister and brother-in-law, Eleanor and Richard, and numerous nephews and nieces (special shout out to his nieces Barbara and Jessica). He enjoyed life, be it the little or grand events and left a mark on all he encountered with his sense of humor and common decency. A joint internment for both "swabbies", Phil and Pat, will be held at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery sometime in the summer of 2021.

Phil was literally my favorite coworker when I worked for The Lake Monsters. He would visit the beer tent, give hugs and always check in on everyone. Seeing Phil made a bad day better! Love ya, Phil! ❤

I played baseball with Phil in the Senior Men's Baseball League. Great guy and fun to be around. After our baseball careers I looked forward to seeing him at the Lake Monsters games. Sorry to hear of his passing.
