SHELDON WEINER Obituary

SHELDON WEINER, M.D. - BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. - Sheldon Weiner, 76, beloved husband, father, and grandfather passed away on Thursday, Jan. 22, 2015, in Bonita Springs, Fla. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on June 25, 1938, the only son of Kate and Murray Weiner. He attended Erasmus Hall High School where he played football and was an avid Brooklyn Dodgers fan. Shelly received both his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Vermont. There he met Louise Magram and they were married on Sept. 5, 1960. He distinguished himself in postgraduate training and as a research associate at the National Center for the Prevention and Control of Alcoholism at the National Institute of Mental Health. Shelly then began his 32 year association as a member of the faculty at UVM, including service as Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry for 16 years. His research led to new understanding of aspects of alcoholism and led to his being named a Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association. He published numerous papers and book chapters in areas of alcoholism, was an editorial reviewer for many journals, and in 2001 was named Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry. During these years in Vermont, he enjoyed boating on Lake Champlain, traveling, running, gardening, swimming and working out at the gym. Later, he read three books a week on his Kindle and always maintained his quest for more knowledge. After retirement from UVM, Louise and Shelly moved to Naples, Fla., where he opened a private practice and was on the staff of the NCH Healthcare System. Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 54 years, Louise; children, Danielle, Eric and Elizabeth (Laurence); and his pride and joy, grandchildren, Jack Henry, Iris and Tate. He is also survived by his sister, Iris (Edward) Miller; sister-in-law, Audrey Magram (Andrew Ionta); as well as cousins, friends and colleagues in the Burlington area. His funeral was held on Friday, Jan. 23, 2015, in Ft. Myers, Fla. Donations in Shelly's memory may be made online to the American Heart Association.

Dr Weiner had such a wonderful reputation in the hospital in Burlington. I will never forget him coming into my room after I had surgery with a little gift and to this day I remember thinking how sweet it was of him to take the time out of his busy day. So sad for his wonderful family today.

My condolences to Louise ,children and grandchildren .Shelly was a fraternity brother a roommate and a friend .A very hard worker with a dry sense of humor .Our year together in a downtown Burlington apartment above a small market was spent talking about who would get some kerosene to heat the place .Most often it never happened and we depended upon what ever heat came up from the apartment below ,it wasn't much.
