I was at CVU in the mid-70's. What I remember most about Mr. Devine was that he treated all students kindly and with respect and in doing so he was in fact respected by students and well liked. A very great legacy to leave indeed.

The mighty lion's roar has been forever silenced. For anyone who sat in one of Tom's study halls, I'm sure that they would agree with that description of his way of discipline. It took just a few words to get his point across.
How many young people did Tom influence? Far more than his family will ever know. He was a true guidance counselor without the official title.
Thank you, Tom, for being such a good family friend. You are missed. I will especially miss your laugh.

There are always certain memorable occasions when a good friend passes. Tom was the first teacher to welcome me to the CVU staff in 1967 and it certainly was my privilege to work with and be his friend for many years. One could always depend on honesty and forthrightness when relating with Tom. His presence will be missed. Take care Tom.

Tom was my supervisor when I first started teaching at CVU in 1972. He was then in charge of the Humanities Department (English and Social Studies). He always operated with style and grace and had wonderful ideas about how to manage all of us. So off we all went on a two-day retreat at a delightful Catholic camp in the Champlain Islands. Here we were indoctrinated in the "Devine" way while enjoying great food, budding friendships, and fun and games to get us all in the mood to treat our students in Tom's first class manner. Tom was a delightful storyteller, intellect, antique collector, humanitarian and leader. Cheers to a great guy who will be missed forever in the CVU community.

I am so lucky to have met Tom at the beginning of my life in Vermont. Not only did he hire me at CVU, he went on to become a trusted friend, adviser, and confidant, for almost 40 years. He retained his wit, his sharp intellect, his measured perspective on all topics to the end. There is a great big hole in my heart and world that can never be filled.

It was about this time of year in 1960. I was in my senior year at Hinesburg High School and like most other boys my age I was looking forward to getting out and on with my life. A Job? The military? Mr. Devine , my English teacher, had other ideas. One day he called me into his office, handed me three college applications and said, “Fill these out.” “No way”, I replied. “Want to pass English? Fill them out,” he insisted.

Four years later, my senior year at Springfield College, I was in the same boat. A job? The military? (Did I mention where Springfield College is? Springfield, Massachusetts right next door to Longmeadow, Massachusetts. His family home.) Which meant every time he came home he came to visit me. I could not escape that man!

The new Champlain Valley Union High School was scheduled to open in the fall of 1964. Tom suggested I apply. “Are you crazy?” I thought. “Go back to my home town to start my teaching career?” I had already taken my Navy tests and was just a signature away from enlisting. Tom encouraged, “Try teaching for a year. If you don't like it you can always go into the Navy.”

So there I was, my first year teaching at CVUHS. I really didn't have a clue of how to teach especially in a school where seventeen of my students were relatives of mine.

Mr. Devine was now Tom, a colleague, my mentor, and quickly became one of my best friends.

Because of Tom I lasted at CVUHS for thirty-five years.

Thank you Tom. I will miss you.

I remember Mr. Devine not only as a highly respected teacher, well-liked by his students, but also as an accomplished actor with great comedic timing as seen in his appearance in "Charley's Aunt" in the late 60s at CVUHS. Still a happy memory!

Mr. Devine was a great teacher, who loved literature and Shakespeare. I am grateful to have had him as my English teacher at Hinesburg High School.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face;
the rains fall soft upon your fields
and until we meet again,
may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
