Walter Norman Hinkleman

February 24, 1916 - October 10, 2014

Cary

W. Norman Hinkleman, 98, died on Friday, October 10, 2014 at Glenaire Retirement Center in Cary.

Mr. Hinkleman was born on Feb. 24, 1916 in Binghamton, New York to the late Walter and Gertrude Hinkleman. As a young man he enjoyed skiing, ice skating, baseball, swimming, fishing, and canoeing.

He was employed by IBM for 34 years transferring to Cary in 1965. He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Cary for 49 years, where he was part of the Ellis Bland Class. After retiring at age 58, Norm enjoyed golf and played until age 97, getting 4 holes in one. Norm was family man who liked traveling, history, playing pool, bowling, and fishing.

Norm was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife Helen Hinkleman of 75 years; daughter Linda Gunter of Cary; son Wally Hinkleman (Faye) of Raleigh; grandchildren Tracy Gunter (Meredith) of Apex, Jamye Gunter of Atlanta, Ashley and Christopher Hinkleman of Raleigh, and Jerry Winstead (Dolores) of Louisburg; and great-grandchildren Gretchen Gunter, Faith and Savannah Winstead. He is predeceased by a daughter Carol Hinkleman.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, October 15, at 11:00 am at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home in Cary. Burial will follow at Raleigh Memorial Park in Raleigh. Officiating will be Rev. William Green. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, October 14, from 7-9 pm at Brown-Wynne Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the First United Methodist Church of Cary, PSC Partner Seeking A Cure, or to Glenaire Foundation.

The family wants to express their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Glenaire for their loving care and support for the last 13 years. You are all fantastic!

Linda and family: I was saddened to hear about the loss of your Dad. I know you gave him much love and care, and he will be missed. It is always difficult to lose your father so take the time to grieve, and soon, the grief will be replaced with sweet memories of the time you had with him. Be at peace.
