WILHELM KALWEIT Obituary

DR. WILHELM H. KALWEIT SPRINGFIELD, OH - Dr. Wilhelm H. Kalweit, 56, of Springfield, Ohio, met his untimely death on Saturday, Nov. 7, 2009. He was flying alone in his "Air Cam" when undetermined causes brought the plane down. Dr. Kalweit, "Bill," was born in Lubeck, Germany on May 5, 1953, the youngest son of August and Auguste (Rupkalwis) Kalweit. Bill's parents moved the family to the United States in 1956. Bill grew up on a dairy farm in West Chazy, New York and attended the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, graduating with majors in Physics and Chemistry and a minor in Biology. He then attended the University of Vermont Medical School and married Suzanne, his wife of almost 30 years. Bill graduated in 1981 and did his internship and residency at the Medical Center Hospital of Vermont in Burlington. In 1985, Bill moved to Dayton for a Cardiology Fellowship at Good Samaritan Hospital and Wright State University College of Medicine. After working with Dr. Sylvan Weinberg and Dr. Thomas Carmody, Bill settled in Springfield in 1989, opening his own cardiology practice and serving the community since that time. In addition to his work and boundless love of family and friends, Bill ardently pursued many hobbies. He was an avid pilot and gladly took anyone interested for rides. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, farming, bee keeping, and raising fruit trees. And he was quick to roll up his sleeves when chores needed doing; it was not uncommon to find him - having come straight from his practice - mowing the runway at Mad River Airport while still attired in a dress shirt and tie. Bill also hated to let things go to waste, and he could repair almost anything if given the time. Bill is survived by his wife Suzanne (Fachon) and his son Christopher, a sixth grader at Ridgewood School and the light of Bill's life. Bill is also survived by two sisters and their spouses, Irma and Arno Herrmann of Stoughton, MA, and Auguste and Heinz Megalaitis of Norwood, MA, and two brothers and their spouses, Otto and Margaret Kalweit of Stoughton, MA, and George and Betsy Kalweit of Ontario, N.Y., and a brotherin-law James Ashline of Rouses Point, NY. Over the past 30 years Bill became very close to his inlaws, becoming like a third son to Eugene and Carolyn and an integral part of the Fachon clan. Dean and Wendy and Eric and Alicia, their children, and many other nieces, nephews, friends, patients and colleagues will miss him terribly. As Bill left this life, he joins his parents and his eldest sister Herta Ashline. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday, Nov. 15, from 2 to 6 p.m. at the LITTLETON & RUE FUNERAL HOME, 830 N. Limestone St., Springfield. A memorial service will be held on Monday, Nov. 16, 2 p.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Fr. Marv Hackman officiating. In lieu of flowers, please send donations in memory of Dr. Kalweit to the Champaign Aviation Museum, 87 S. Ludlow Rd., Urbana, OH 43078 (937-4846947), Ridgewood School, 2420 St. Paris Pike, Springfield, OH 45504 (937-3998900), or your favorite charity. Dear Aunt Suzanne & Christopher,

I hope that you both have found a stable ground since the funeral. If you need anything at all, please let me know.

Reminiscing on memories of Uncle Wilhelm and his many wonderful traits, I first remember his persistence. He was demonstrating how to tap the knee a certain way to achieve a reflex while my Mom, brothers, and I were visiting Oma. He was successful on first hit with everyone’s knees but mine. I remember the disbelief on his face when my left knee didn’t respond. He looked at it as if it were a code waiting to be cracked. He cocked his head to the side and tapped a little more to the right, then a little more to the left. His many attempts paid off with a weak kick. Years later, on a visit to Ohio, you both were so great in showing me the highlights of the state. The two of you were like big kids enjoying everything that there was to do. Uncle Wilhelm’s persistence and reassurance had me trying an exciting new rollercoaster ride at King's Island. Uncle Wilhelm’s empathy had him putting the worms on my hook for me while showing me how to fly fish. And Uncle Wilhelm’s love for his family was shining when he so generously gave the gift of a wonderful cruise to my Mom and Dad, her sisters and their spouses in my Mom’s final months. I remember telling him about sending my parents on a much-deserved vacation. He stated that he would take care of it all—he just needed to know where she wanted to go. She and my Dad had the most fantastic time on that cruise and I will never forget how he made her so happy during that time of bleakness. I feel so blessed to have been a part of his life.

With love always,

The Ashlines & Stegners

Mrs. Kalweit and family,

I remember Bill so well from the Mad River Airport...I was with the FAA and was plannig to fly with him in the Air Cam for his multi-engine rating before I retired. I admired him so...he was passionate about the airport and about flying. Please know I will always remember him and your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Suzanne & Christopher, My deepest sympathy to you. Being employed by Dr. Kalweit for the past seventeen years has not just been a job, but a career that I have truly loved. Doctor Kalweit was not only an employer, but a friend. Over the years I have heard many jokes! I will never forget his hardy laughter and that BIG smile. I am so blessed that he had enough faith and trust in me to let me work from home for the past fourteen years. There are so many memories that I will always cherish, especially the day Christopher was born and from that day on, seeing the pride on Dr. Kalweit's face EVERY time he talked about him. You were both the pride of his life. I am so blessed to have known Dr. Kalweit. A strong family man, a Caring, compassionate Cardiologist, a friend. He will be greatly missed but NEVER forgotten

To the Kalweit family,
Our deepest sympathy to you. If you were wondering where Dr. Kalweit was on Christmas Eve, 1998, he was in surgery with me. I received two stents that evening thus saving my life by preventing a heart attack. I know I never was able to thank him enough for what he did for me. I will miss him and Thank you again for sharing him with the rest of the community.

To the Kalweit family;
My deepest regrets to you. How lucky we all are to have had him in our lives. I am proud of the work we did. Such an intelligent and multifaceted man. It was amazing how many things he knew. I miss working with him. That laugh he had! When he cracked himself up, you had to smile. I read the memories from of his niece. They were wonderful. I saw a side of him I never knew in the photos today. He must have been great fun! Every day I saw him this summer he asked me if i was ready to fly. I never did go. I wish I had.

Sue and Christopher,
Your father's passion for life and knowledge was undeniable.
My memories go back to the dairy farm in NY. There, life was all hard work and sweat. Yet somewhere along the way is the reality and calmness of knowing that you can be self-sufficient working closely with nature. We( my family) spent our sumer vacations with our grandparents and "Bill" working the farm and helping to prepare for the winter months. I remember the hard work of baling hay, cutting wood and stocking the wood cellar, preserving vegetables and, filling the corn silo. In his free time between the farm work and school, "Bill" always had time to have some fun. He was a great mentor, teacher, and symbol of what hard work and determination could produce. I idolized his zest for life. I remember his first 22 guage rifle and the makeshift target practices made of emptied soda cans and scrap metal. I was eight years old when he taught me to fire a gun. Back then he hunted rabbits and raccoons with his 22. He continued and progressed to hunting deer by bow, shotgun, and rifle. He was still waiting for that one " big buck" that roamed his Ohio land. He loved fishing in the nearby stream and was proud of his "homemade" flies learned from a book. Everyone in the family will always remember his tale of the "4 foot" Northern Pike that got away while fishing on Lake Champlain.
His continued hardwork and quest for knowledge and exellence, produced scholarships to college and Medical school with incredible undergraduate grades in Physics and Chemistry. He embodied the "American" dream after immigrating to this country at the age of 2. His bookcase was just recently moved from my grandparents farm where all of his many notebooks and texbooks still resided. His antique bookcase bought at auction will always be a reminder of how important it is to educate oneself in order to succeed.
His love for Suzanne, Christopher, family, and friends was unfalterieng. I met Suzanne when I was 12 years old and living the summer with my grandmother. Bill and Suzanne were dating and decided to take me on their date to the movies. They picked Amityville Horror. Bill was tortured between Suzanne's screams and sharpfingers and my constant squeezing of his arms. He was a glutton for punishment that night. Over the last 20 years, I have witnessed their love for each other only grow stronger everyday. Their trials of life brought them only closer. They "epitomized" The Prophet's saying on marriage. I remember as if it was yesterday, Suzanne reading it at my own wedding. Bill's love for his mother brought her to their home in Ohio where I had the honor of helping with a family need, as well as learning who my uncle was as an adult. During this time, I became close not only to my uncle but also to a wonderful and giving aunt who I regard as a close friend. The birth of Christopher was yet another wonderful addition to our family. Bill and Suzanne's love for Christopher opened another chapter to their marriage. Bill had time for work, family, and his many hobbies and life's releases. I remember Christopher as the fastest crawling toddler I have ever seen. When Bill would open and close the door, Chris would know who it was by the sound and vibration of his footsteps. Bill Suzanne and Christoper's love for each other have always been transparent and visual to all who knew them . They had fun together whether at the amusement parks riding the rollercoasters or their family themed Halloween costumes dressed in pooh, tigger, or eyorre. I'll never forget their costumes of the 3 out of 5 teletubbies.
Bill supported his family with medical advice and expertise. He was always available with any questions or concerns. He and Suzanne started the first family reunion for the Kalweit clan 14 years ago after my marriage. We all remember his "melt-in-your-mouth: steaks, the caravans to the beach, the time watching the sunsets in falmouth, and his conversations in the always ongoing and evergrowing hobbies of planting corn, farming some of his land, planting apple orchards, honey bees, guns, flying and so much more.
His medical practice took him away from home often, but he always didn't mind. His enthusiam in the care of others was obvious. He was the doctor that people knew would listen and care. He strived to give the best of himself to his patients, collegues, and staff. This has been even more evident after reading all guest enteries so far. He would have not wanted a grandiose send-off to heaven but, your words are comforting to our family who have read them. Thank You for your kind word and thoughts.
Bill, I will miss you and will always look to the sky thinking of the solice you received by flying your plane where there was peace and quiet above the sometimes chaotic world below. I love you so much.
Suzanne and Christopher, I love both of you and hope that you will find that same peace and solice when you are ready. Bill's spirit will always live within those who loved him.

Nancy D. Doyle
Your loving niece.

Everyone in the Heart Center was deeply saddened to hear about Dr. Kalweit. He was truely a dedicated and brilliant Cardiologist who loved his patients and they loved him. I cannot attempt to write all the wonderful memories of working with him for 20+ years, but do know that the happiest day of his life was the birth of his son Christopher. Dear Mrs Kalweit

For the past number of years, you and or "Bill" with your son, visited our orchard. It was not a single visit, but he would visit nearly every week. We discussed tree growth, grafting, production, characteristics of each variety. This spring and summer I visited his "orchard" east of the buildings at the airport and we discussed its progress during his visits this fall.

I remember several occassions when we would stand and talk for over an hour after we closed. Last year he prepared a cd of aerial photographs of our orchard and a Saturday's activity. It is a treasure.

During an Air Force career I accumulated over 7000 flying hours and thus the subject of airplanes was also a frequent subject of our visits.

Please accept my deepest condolences. I will miss seeing Bill on future fall weekends, not as a customer, but as a friend with at least two mutual interests.

The Lord be with you.

Dear Suzanne and Christopher,
I worked with Bill when he first started at Mercy in CCU for years and later in the cath lab. We literally had a family in the lab and I still miss all the great times we all had. I learned so much from him and always thought he was absolutely amazing at his practice. He taught me so much, and had such a commended work ethic and compassion for his patients. My children always loved watching him fly over our home, and he always lit up when he talked about you both.I remember we had a halloween party and you three came dressed as Pooh, Tigger, and Eyeore! I am shocked and saddened by his death. He is greatly missed and will never be forgotten. He loved his career, his flying, and mostly his family. He was the proudest man alive when Christopher came into your lives. I know you pain is immense now, but God will give you both the strength you need to go on.

Dear Suzanne and Christopher,
I was so devastated to hear the news of Dr Kalweit's untimely passing. I know he is flying with the angels in Heaven and I hope there are plenty of deer running around and hunting is allowed! I had the honor of being part of your family from 1991 - 1999, when Bill and I moved to Springfield from San Francisco and Dr Kalweit gave me a job. He touched so many lives. He loved you both very much. I'll never forget the day Christopher was born. Dr. Kalweit called the office to tell us the news. It was the happiest day of his life and Chris was only one hour old and Dr Kalweit put the phone to that newborn's ear and wanted me to talk to him. It was so precious and I'll never forget it or him.

Mrs. Kalweit and Christopher,

I worked in the medical staff office when Dr. Kalweit was recruited to Springfield. Over the years, I enjoyed his stories of Christopher, his family, his love for hunting, flying and life.

Last year he took me flying on several different occasions. We took a camera where we documented in pictures the progress of the new surgical hospital and the new hospital. It was quite a thrill that I will never forget.

You will be in my thoughts and prayers. I am so very sorry.

My heart aches for you in this time of loss. I worked with Dr. K in the old CCU at Mercy and presently at SRMC. The joy that came to his face when he mentioned his family. He was so proud to share his family photos and stories ( halloween costumes, first buck, safari etc...)
The care that he gave to his patients was untouchable. He helped to build our coronary care unit. I don't think he took a day off the first three years he started at Mercy. Pure dedication to the field of Cardiology. He will be sadly missed.
My thoughts and prayers are with you all during this time.

Dr. Kalweit;
As one of your Wittenberg Pre-Medical Interns in 2008, you showed me what it was like to be a wonderful physician. I thank you not only for those priceless experiences and lessons that I will carry with me into my own future as a physician but also for sharing some of your passions: great deals from hong kong online retailers (100mW green lasers that pop balloons), hunting and aviation. I will never forget the time we spent 3000 feet over Springfield able to see Columbus 40 miles away, cruising over the reservoir and taking pictures of the developing Springfield Medical campus downtown. Don't worry... I won't forget how much fun you can have looking at 2D echocardiograms for 3 hours straight.

I like to be optimistic--- at least in heaven there may be a better selection of retired European jets for you to chose from.

Miss you Dr. Kalweit.

I have many fond memories of Opa and Oma's farm where he and I spent time together building rockets, fishing exporing lake champlain, star gazing, target shooting, and drinking ice cold soda pop in glass bottles on hot summer days come to mind. I am very fortunate for the time that I spent with him. Many of things that uncle Bill taught me, or introduced me too I now share with my own two sons. Uncle Bill you live on in other ways.

Suzanne and Christopher,

I was deeply saddened to hear of the sudden, untimely, passing of Dr. K. My thoughts and prayers to both of you during this most difficult time. As a cardiac nurse working with Dr. K for his entire career in Springfield, and as a patient, I have the utmost respect for his expertise in patient management, no nonsense get-to-the-point/get-it-done attitude. Whether going toe-to-toe with him on some issue, listening to his sometimes ridiculous jokes/stories, hearing the pride in his voice and seeing the joy on his face when it came to speaking of his family, or just passing him in the hall with an abrupt greeting, I will most certainly miss "Big Bill".

God bless you and may you find comfort in all the memories of your lives shared together,
Julie Lauer

Suzanne and Christopher,
Words cannot express our sadness at the passing of your husband and father. Dr. Kalweit was more than our boss, he was our friend. As his staff we were able to see the many facets of his personality. His stories and ornery jokes and hearty laugh will be sorely missed by all. He has left a footprint on our hearts that will remain forever. It has been a privilege to have worked with him and we are better people for having known him. With much love, Christina, Rose, Amy, Maureen, Heather & Joni

Dear Suzanne and Christopher, We met on occasions and were impressed by Bill's love for family. We know he was a very special person and will be greatly missed. There is a feeling that he is now with his sister, Herta, in heaven. Before she succumbed to Cancer he helped make her last year happy. He took time out from his busy schedule to be with her frequently. Once they flew over her and her daughters houses. The aerial photos that were taken were great. Photography is another good hobby shared by you Suzanne and Bill. Your family has many captured memories. It is sad that such good people leave us much too soon. Our prayers go out to you and Christopher who loved him dearly. Love, Pat and Dan Stegner and Family

Kalweit Family,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I worked with Dr Kalweit years ago in Dayton at Good Samaritan. He was a real card. Called me Mama and expected me to wait on him. We had a good time and he did have a sence of humor. May the Lord bless your family and comfort you at this time.

Dear Kalweit Family,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Doc Kalweit's passing. Many flight hours have passed since I flew with him at Mad River Airport where I also flew from. We left Springfield in 1997 but just a few days ago my wife and I were talking about flying at the airport and how much Bill enjoyed flying. He touched many lives in many ways and will be missed (I'm sure) by many. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you.

I cannot begin to express how much I greive with you. Dr Kalweit has saved my father so many times. The first more than 20 years ago. My heart aches when I think about how unique and wonderful this man was. I know you leave behind many people who loved you beyond imagination, but God must have needed a wonderful cardiologist in heaven. Thank you and you wonderful family for all you have done for my family over the last 20 plus years. May your family have some peace and comfort in the days and weeks and years ahead, the kind of peace he gave to all of us..

Suzanne and Chris,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Dr. Kalweit was such a great man, husband, father and cardiologist. I have worked with him for the last 10 years in the CCU/ICU and have such a high respect for him. He was so passionate about life--his family, hunting and flying. I have a lot of "Suzanne" and "Chris" stories I could tell you that I'm sure would make you smile. He was a fantastic cardiologist to my parents over the last several years and was also a major part in saving the life of my father-in-law in a code situation. I hope you realize how many lives he has touched. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

For the past seven years, our family has had the pleasure of an evening visitor who never set foot on our property. It was Dr. Kalweit, who "buzzed" our home in his airplane. When we looked up to wave, there'd be a smiling, laughing face waving back at us. He will be missed by so many. Our deepest sympathy to Suzanne and Chris, our wonderful friends and neighbors.
