WILLIAM LARRABEE Obituary

WILLIAM HARRY LARRABEE - VERGENNES - William Harry Larrabee passed away on Feb. 23, 2014. Born in 1922, he was the only surviving child of William C. Larrabee and Bertha (Blood), and stepson of William H. Hanley. Bill was proud of the fact that he lived his entire life on MacDonough Drive in Vergennes, having been away from the city he loved so much only to serve with the U.S. Submarine Service in the Pacific fleet during W.W.II. Bill was primarily raised by his grandparents, Harry and Amy Blood, in the same house he called home for over 90 years. Bill served as a Postal Clerk in Vergennes for many years, but is probably better known as a bartender at the Dog Team Tavern, as well as at the Basin Harbor Club, Middlebury Inn and the Hatchway in Vergennes. He also served in the U.S. Navy and after, the Naval Reserves out of Burlington for 40 years. In those jobs, he acquired a wealth of knowledge about local lore and history of Vergennes and its families which he loved to share with anyone that would listen. Bill was a member of Dorchester Lodge No. 1 Free and Accepted Masons, the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, Valley of Burlington, and the Cairo Temple Shriners of Rutland for over 60 years each, and life member of the U.S. Submarine Veterans of World War II, and the Association of Torpedoman's Mates. Locally, he was a member of the American Legion Post #14, the Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, and former charter member of the Vergennes Lions Club. His gift of colorful storytelling will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Rebecca (Blaise); daughter, June Sargent; daughter-in-law, Mae Larrabee; granddaughter, Lynn Cyr and her family; brother, Joseph Hanley; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; infant sister, Loretta Larrabee; son, William G. Larrabee; and sisters, Barbara Peters and Jeanne Lenahan. By Bill's request, there will be no funeral services and only a small private committal service later in the spring. Friends and family are welcome to stop by the Larrabee home at their convenience for a quick visit and to share a story or two.

RIP Uncle Bill! You were one of a kind...Aunt Becky, June and Mae...you know we are all sending love and prayers your way. I too loved to hear Uncle Bill's stories, and when we went to the Dog Team when he was bar tending, I used to tell the waitress NOT to tell him he was fixing a drink for me because I knew he would be very "generous" and I would have to stumble out of there!

John Mitchell

February 27, 2014

I lived in the Vergennes area for 8 years, having just moved in July 2013. I first met Bill at the Veteran's Day parade Vergennes hosted in 2005 - he was decked out in his Navy Chief's dress blues and looking very much the old salt. Owing to our common Navy backgrounds, we became friends over the years and I heard many a sea story from him. When I had out-of-town guests, a drive-by of Bill's house on McDonough drive was a stop on the Vergennes tour - the submarine dolphins on the garage, the flagpoles and memorial to his son across the street and the impeccably maintained grounds. If we were lucky, Bill would be out and about and I could "talk him into" sharing a few stories about Vergennes and the Navy with my guests.

My sincere condolences to Bill's family. He was one of my favorite people from the years I lived in VT.

Bill,
Please accept my sincere condolences on the recent loss of your father. It's been many, many years since you, your Dad and I served together in the US Naval Reserves in Surface Division 1-44 (M) at 1 College Street in Burlington, which is where I first met him as our beloved Master At Arms. He was a role model shipmate who had a story for every occasion! What a great man. Please find comfort in knowing that you and your entire family are in my thoughts and prayers at this difficult time.

I always enjoyed seeing Bill around Vergennes, he was always keenly interested in the civic affairs of the City. His smile and quick wit would always brighten my day. I remember he would always insist that I call him "Bill" - not "Mr. Larrabee", " Because all my friends call me Bill". Vergennes will not be the same without him. Rest in Peace, Bill.

My thoughts are with the Larrabee family as I remember all the stories he would tell me at the Middlebury College Mail Center. Bill stopped in twice a month to pick up a dozen copies of " The Campus " for 20 years to mail to friends local and around the country. What a thoughtful man.

We were so saddened today to read of Bill's passing. He was a gem and a true Vergennes-ite, possessed of a prodigious memory and gifted with the special arts of nickname-bestowal and storytelling. He also was warm-hearted - we know that from his many kindnesses over the years to Hope's parents, Bernard and Catherine Daigneault. From the period we lived in Vermont following our marriage, we recall Bill behind the bar at the Dogteam Tavern. Himself never a drinker, he would mix us the best-ever Rob Roys and Dry Martinis. We shall miss his birthday and Christmas cards and occasional Vergennes photos, always bearing his hand-printed legend: "Ya!". To Rebecca, June and Mae, and all Bill's family, our deep condolences.
