Wanda Adams Obituary

Wanda Adams, 94, passed away on July 19, 2023.

Funeral services were held on Monday July 24, 2023, at First Baptist Church in Bertram with interment at Post Mountain Cemetery, Burnet, Texas.

Born May 22, 1929, the daughter of J.T. and Lucille Smith who resided near Holland, TX. The family moved to Troy when she was a junior, thus she graduated there.

Wanda married Harold Winnett and they lived in Dallas for several years. Both sons, James and Jerry, were born there. The family moved to Bonham in 1958 where the boys grew up being very active in school. Scouting was important to both sons as they became Eagle Scouts.

A member of the businesswomen's organizations, she was employed by the daily newspaper for sixteen years. A favorite memory was when Sam Rayburn was in the hospital and Lyndon Johnson flew in each Saturday and she got to greet him when he landed. Also, Mr. Sam's funeral, getting to see all the officials, and take pictures, in including President Kennedy and other former presidents.

In mid-seventies, after James had graduated from Sam Houston, married Kathy Wood, and settled in Bonham, she moved to San Angelo to be near her brother, James Smith. Employed by the newspaper, she had more spare time, which was spent with her nieces, Deborah, and Brenda. Son, Jerry, was in school at San Angelo college, married Sherri Bicknell and they moved to Austin and then to Lakeway, where he has been a Real Estate Broker for more than thirty-five years.

Wanda married Virgil Adams in 1975, they lived in Silver Creek Village where they were active in the First Baptist Church. She served on several committees, especially the building committee, then she was church secretary for several years. After Virgil's death she moved to Delaware Springs in Burnet, where a friend had moved, so with Johnny Bailey, they found First Baptist Church in Bertram, thus their church home. This group with Pastor Gordon Bergstrom became like a much-loved family.

Wanda will be thought of, especially by her sons, Jerry Winnett and wife, Sherry of Lakeway, TX, and James Winnett and wife, Kathy of Point, Texas. The Winnett grandchildren, Kelsi of Dripping Springs, Katy Joe of Bedford, and Brandon of Temple. Other favorites are, nephew, Larry Smith and Robi of San Angelo; nieces, Deborah Freeman and Richard also from San Angelo, Brenda Greer and Delvin of Eldorado; great grandson, Jospeh.

Family members already gone to Glory are, her parents, grandparents, a grandson, and other relatives.
