Harry Levi Byers Jr.
Harry Levi Byers Jr., 85, of Franklin Township, formerly of New Kensington, died Monday. Mr. Byers moved to Franklin Township only two weeks ago.
He was born Jan. 4, 1924, in Cokeville, Indiana County, to the late Harry L. Sr. and Hulda Graden Byers.
He attended the Blairsville schools, and then served our country with distinction in the Army during World War II as a part of the 313th Combat Engineer Battalion, 88th Division, Blue Devils. He served in the Rome-Arno, Northern Apennines and PO Valley campaigns. He was the recipient of the Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars and was presented with a special Gold Leaf from the French Army. He also received special recognition from Volterra, in the province of Pisa, Italy, for his role in its liberation.
He worked for Allegheny Ludlum in Brackenridge 39 years, retiring in 1985.
He was an avid hunter and fisherman and belonged to the American Legion in Arnold, the Local 1196 United Steelworkers Union and the National Campers and Hikers Association.
He was a former member of the Grace Community Presbyterian Church of Lower Burrell and enjoyed camping and traveling throughout the United States.
Surviving are his wife of 64 years, Eva Mae Pochet Byers; three daughters, Karen E. (Jerry) Trauterman of Franklin Township, Brenda K. (Glenn) Perry of Richmond, Va., and Debbie S. (Thomas) McCorkle of Buffalo Township; grandchildren, Dawn Moore, Beth Chippewa, Billy Droste, Tom McCorkle Jr., Jeremy McCorkle and Julie McCorkle; and nine and one-half great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Kenneth Byers, Paul Byers, Winifred Palmer and Dorothy Munshire.
BYERS - Visitation for Harry Levi Byers Jr., who died Monday, Nov. 16, 2009, will be from 1 to 3 and 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday in ROSS G. WALKER FUNERAL HOME, 217 Freeport Road, New Kensington, 724-335-1234. Additional visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, followed by military honors conferred by the Vandergrift Veterans Honor Guard. Private burial will be in Greenlawn Burial Estates, Mount Chestnut.
