Jane Hoyt Obituary

Jane Elizabeth Grossman Hoyt, of Grove City, passed away at her residence surrounded by family on Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, following an extended illness.
She was born in Mt. Vernon, Ohio, on April 19, 1932, to George Dewey Grossman and Pauline Lenora Horn Grossman, a veterinarian and cook, respectively. She was a descendant of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th president of the United States.
Jane graduated from Gambier High School in 1950.
Jane met her future husband, Bernard Sargent Hoyt, while working in the dining hall at Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio. Love grew and they were married on Aug. 23, 1950.
Jane earned her bachelor of science degree in home economics from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in 1953.
Jane and her husband embarked together upon a life-long journey to provide medical care and philanthropic support to their communities in 1960. Jane began her career in the Extension Office of Butler and Mercer County before joining her husband as his office manager.
Jane was a long-time, active member of the Church of The Epiphany, Episcopal Church in Grove City, where she served in several capacities on the Bishop committee. She was head of the Church Altar Guild for the last 15 years.
She enjoyed her work as a volunteer for the Grove City Library, over 25 years with Meals on Wheels and at the various Grove City Hospitals as they evolved, including United Community Hospital and later Grove City Medical Center for over 40 years.
She was a member of the Shakespeare Club, Investment Club, Philanthropic Educational Organization (P.E.O.) and a 50-year member of Grove City Women's Club.
Jane enjoyed travelling and was fortunate to travel the world with her husband and, at times, their children.
She enjoyed baking, cooking and canning for her family. She shared her love of cooking with her children and grandchildren. Jane's Grinder sandwich was the family's favorite.
She loved and appreciated flowers and gardens. Thus, she taught her children to weed.
When her husband became District Governor of Rotary District 7280, Jane became first lady and driver traveling to and serving all the clubs in the Rotary District stretching from Erie to Cranberry Township. Being first lady provided Jane with the opportunity to make long-lasting national and international friendships.
Jane was blessed and enjoyed 60 years of friendship with the "THE GIRLS," where they met to play bridge, celebrated family milestones and, in later years, monthly lunches. She enjoyed animals and birds, a trait she inherited from her veterinarian father.
Jane enjoyed taking classes in Asian cooking and attending cooking school at the Greenbrier Resort in West Virginia. Jane appreciated and enjoyed live theater and musical concerts.
She was a vibrant, involved and giving woman. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren.
"The most gorgeous sunset occurred the evening of Sept. 26, 2021, with stunning blues, purples, pinks and yellow, and so, so bright. That was Grandma Jane being welcomed into heaven, free of all pain, getting the welcoming she deserved." As seen and reported by her granddaughter Melinda and great-granddaughter Mabel Jane.
Survivors include her husband, Bernard of Grove City; daughter, Barbara (Clifford) Wise of Grove City; sons, Dr. David (Tracey) Hoyt of Mercer and Douglas (McCallum) Hoyt Sr. of Russell Township, Ohio; three grandchildren, Melinda (Eric) Pedersen of Concord N.H., Douglas (Megan) Hoyt Jr. of Columbus, Ohio, and Mason Wise of Grove City; and two great-grandchildren, Mabel Jane Pedersen and William Callan Pedersen.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
HOYT - A service of celebrating the life of Jane Elizabeth Grossman Hoyt, who died Sunday, Sept. 26, 2021, will be held at the Church of the Epiphany, Grove City, with the Rev. Tricia Lavery presiding, at a future time and date.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to the Grove City Meals on Wheels (gcamow.weebly.com) or the Grove City Library. Arrangements are by SMITH FUNERAL HOME, Volant.
