This is belated but, in honor of Teacher Appreciation week, I'd like to share the teacher who had the biggest impact on my life.
Mr. Gerner was my 5th Grade teacher at Lyndora Elementary circa 1985. I was an okay student before 5th grade, but really disinterested. Mr. Gerner was different; he caught in a very engaging way ...and also had a commanding presence. Was it the wolf pelt on the wall? His biceps? Or simply a commanding, no nonsense presence? Certainly all of that and more.
I distinctly remember spending quite a bit of time in 4th grade pretending my hands were dinosaurs and having them attack each other (or more often, the "duckbill" get killed by the "t-rex"). I couldn't imagine doing that in Mr. Gerner's classroom - if I tried, he certainly wouldn't allow it.
5th grade was a bit of a turning point for me. As I'm nearing the end of 27-years in the Army, I'm thinking that it was more than just an academic turning point.
Rest in Peace.

Mr. Gerner was my friend. I met him in Alaska. we kept in touch than I called him few times a year but i only got his answering machine. I knew something was wrong. He was like a father figured to me. he loved fishing, cooking, gardening, and hunting. Such a beautiful human being. I sure will miss him. He always talked about his sister Dolorese. He talked to me about his teaching kids and he misses them. RIP my friend.

Mr Gerber was my 5th grade teacher close to 50 years ago. I must say that he has always been the best teacher I've had, even counting college & beyond. Just wishing my daughter could've had the honor also.

Mr. Gerner was my sixth grade reading teacher around 1971. I am currently a reading teacher, and I share stories with my students about the lessons he taught.
1. Lincoln didn´t need electricity to read.
2. Don´t copy out of the encyclopedia.
3. Watch the news in case of quiz.
God bless you.

Mr. Gerner taught both of my sons - Joey Mauro and Brad Mauro. We admired his disciplined and humorous unique approach to guiding 5th graders to self discipline, compassion, respect and hard work. Mr. Gerner was an icon at Lyndora Grade School. You either LOVED OR FEARED Mr. Gerner. The Mauro Family LOVED AND RESPECTED HIM.
Every time we drive by an Historical Road Marker..I hear him say to the class. "Never pass it ...stop and read it!"
Thank you Mr. Gerner and enjoy Heaven´s Adventures
