Meriem F. Kaluger
Meriem F. Kaluger, 84, of 625 Brenton St., Shippensburg died Thursday at her home.
Born Oct. 27, 1921, in Butler she was the daughter of Julian H. and Frances A. Reynders Fair.
She was a retired licensed psychologist. She was a former consultant for the Bureau of Rehabilitation Center, Harrisburg; the Capital Intermediate Unit, the Lincoln Intermediate Unit, and the Perceptual Development Center of the Shippensburg Area Schools.
In private practice she was a researcher as a psychologist in learning dysfunctions. She tested more than 2,000 children on an individual basis using tests she developed, neuropsychological tests, and the findings of her research and presented workshops in learning disabilities and ADD.
She was a former adjunct professor at Shippensburg University, where she was supervisor of graduate student interns in the Learning Disabilities Program and a psychologist for the Learning Assistance Center at Shippensburg University. She was certified as a school psychologist in 1967 and licensed as a psychologist in Pennsylvania in 1969. She started her career as a first-grade teacher in the Butler City Schools from 1943 until 1947.
She received her bachelor of science degree in education from Slippery Rock University in 1943, her master of letters in child psychology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1946, and attended the ABD School Psychologist Program at Shippensburg University.
She was a member of Grace United Church of Christ, Pennsylvania Psychological Association, Phi Delta Kappa Professional Society for Educators, Order of the Eastern Star and Order of the White Shrine. She was a former president of the Shippensburg University Faculty Wives, Shippensburg Civic Club, Shippensburg College Club, Shippensburg Historical Society, and in 1987 was national co-chairperson of the Shippensburg University Foundation.
Mrs. Kaluger received the Paul Harris Rotary Club Service Award for work done in the field of learning disabilities and the Shippensburg University Alumni Exceptional Services Award. The Shippensburg Alumni Association made her an honorary Shippensburg University alumnus. She also received the Phi Delta Kappa Emeritus Membership Award, and was listed in the Marquis Edition of Who's Who of American Women.
She co-authored with her husband several books dealing with learning disabilities and human development. Her interests included world travel (she visited 110 countries or regions), engaging in people activities, taking care of her husband, and having a pleasant, relaxing home in which to live.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. George Kaluger, whom she married June 11, 1947.
KALUGER - Funeral services for Meriem F. Kaluger, who died Thursday, July 6, will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Grace United Church of Christ. The Rev. Dr. Francis H. Norton will officiate.
Burial will be in Spring Hill Cemetery. Viewing will be one hour prior to the services on Wednesday.
