Robert Hunter Obituary

Robert "Bob" Leroy Hunter, born July 23, 1941, in Eau Claire, Pa., passed away Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025. He was the son of Homer John Hunter and Josephine Beatty Hunter.
Bob attended Mercersburg Academy and Grove City College, where he developed a lifelong love of learning and forged enduring friendships. It was also at Grove City College where he met the love of his life, Gail.
Bob and Gail were married for 59 wonderful years, sharing a life filled with love, laughter and unwavering support. He was a devoted husband and a proud and caring father to his three children, Steve Hunter (Ann Hart Hunter), Nancy Hunter Mycka (Joe Mycka), and Susan Hunter Fleming. His legacy lives on through his seven beloved grandchildren, Jack Hunter, Sydney Hunter and Elizabeth Hunter, Hunter Mycka and Meredith Mycka, and Lydia Fleming and Audrey Fleming, all of whom he adored and inspired.
A visionary and hardworking entrepreneur, Bob, along with his brother, Harry, grew Hunter Truck Sales from a single location founded by his father, Homer, into one of the largest truck dealerships in the United States. In 2016, he received the industry's highest honor, being named Truck Dealer of the Year for the United States. Bob was also a founding member and served on the board of directors of Idealease, one of the largest truck leasing companies in the country.
Bob's leadership extended beyond the truck business. He was a member of the board of directors of Farmers National Bank of Emlenton for more than 50 years and was actively involved in his community, serving on the school board of the Moniteau School District. Bob also proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Reserve.
Outside of work and service, Bob enjoyed golfing with friends, snowmobiling, watching the Steelers and traveling with Gail. He had a passion for working on his "toys" in the garage and found great joy in mowing the grass or clearing brush on his tractor. His loyalty, friendliness and quiet strength left an indelible mark on everyone he met.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at St. Barnabas for their loving and compassionate care during Bob's last few days.
Bob Hunter will be deeply missed but fondly remembered. His life was a testament to love, dedication, perseverance, and service, and his legacy will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
HUNTER - The family of Robert "Bob" Leroy Hunter, who died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, will hold a memorial service to celebrate Bob's life at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at Harbison Chapel at Grove City College.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Grove City College or The Lighthouse Foundation in Valencia, Pa., reflecting causes that were meaningful to him.

Hi, Gail ... I was so sorry to read of Bob's passing in the Mercersburg magazine I just received. His friendship meant so much to me - his devotion to Mercersburg was so strong. Bob and I graduated high school in the same year. I remember especially, the dinner Bob enjoyed with his Mercersburg classmates on the occasion of their 50th reunion. They passed the hat for Mercersburg and collected what I thought was a more than respectable amount. Then Bob stood up and excoriated them for not having given more. He said he'd lead the way, and he did, and the other guys joined in. Since retiring I've missed my regular visits to Butler, and the golf we enjoyed together on some of those occasions. It was wonderful to see your picture with Bob in the recent Mercersburg magazine. It reminded me of how lucky I was to have been associated with the school.

And, I am still in close touch with your old Grove City classmate Barb Carstensen, who is retired with her husband in Chambersburg. My wife Linda and I moved to Rehoboth Beach, DE in retirement, where our son has a good business.

Memories Over The Years- With Sympathy:
Bob and I grew up together in the little town of Eau Claire, Pennsylvania. He was two years older than me. He lived up the street from us, The Sloan family.

His mother, Josephine, was our Sunday school teacher for several years. His older sister, Donna Jean, an older brother Harry Joe were always busy working at the Hunter´s International Truck Garage. They also helped at the grandparents store, J.M. Beatty´s "your one stop store."

During our Eau Claire school days, Bob and his cousin, Jimmy Beatty left and attended Kiski Prep School, Mercersburg Academy. Then Bob went on to attend Grove City College, marriage, raising a family with Gail and developing Hunter´s Truck Sales into a great business.

I recollect, both of his grandparents, Edith and Harry Hunter, and Velma and Joseph Beatty. Oh, and Bob had a big pure white German shepherd dog I was always hesitant of it.

Where did all those years go?

An "ole town" friend,
Robert (Bob) Sloan
