Alma Pyykkonen Obituary

Alma Valls PyykkonenPainsdale, MIAlma Valls Pyykkonen, 82, a former resident of Painsdale passed away Tuesday evening, July 23, 2013 in Houghton County in Hancock where she had been a resident for the past three years. She was born on March 16, 1931 in McAllen, TX, a daughter of the late Joseph and Lucricia (Villanueva) Valls. As a child, she moved with her family to Alice, TX, where she graduated from William Adams High School. On September 15, 1953 she was united in marriage to Clarence 'Pete' Pyykkonen. The couple first resided in Alice, TX, and since 1963 had made their home in Painesdale. On August 17, 2009, Pete preceded Alma in death. Alma was employed as a nurse's aide mostly in the Emergency Room for Portage Hospital, retiring in 1995 after 30 years. Mrs. Pyykkonen was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in South Range, MI, where she was active with the Altar Society. She was a member of Ranger's Post #6165 VFW Auxiliary of South Range. Alma also enjoyed sewing projects. Preceding her in death were her husband Pete, her parents, her sister; Lily and her brothers; Robert, Joe Jr., Arnold and Ernesto. She is survived by her children: Linda (Charles) Yahn of Nashville, TN, Robert (Katie) Pyykkonen of Spencerport, NY, Richard (Betty) Pyykkonen of Greece, NY, Joseph (Lisa) Pyykkonen of South Range, her grandchildren: Sara (Bill) Ture of Rush, NY, Nicole, Mikaela & Megan Pyykkonen of Greece, NY, Brendan & Alexis Pyykkonend of South Range, MI, her brothers: Eddie (Corine) Valls, Louis (Olga) Valls, Andy Valls, her sister: Bessie Garcia, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
