Funeral services for Gene Frederick Grabbs will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018 graveside at the Erskine Family Cemetery at 499 FM 2691 in Zavala County at 1:30 p.m. Mr. Grabbs was born November 28, 1929 to James Frederick Grabbs and Lamera (Motes) Grabbs in Uvalde, Texas. He and his wife, Louise, had lived in the Corpus Christi area for much of their life where he had been a lineman for Central Power and Light Company for some eighteen years and later retired from Southwestern Refinery in Corpus Christi. Mr. Grabbs and his wife were avid square dancers and even operated a square dance shop. They both retired in 1990 and moved to her family ranch in Zavala County near Cometa. They were both members of the First United Methodist Church in Carrizo Springs and she worked at the church for some time as a secretary. His wife preceded him in death January 8, 2018. Mr. Grabbs passed away at the ranch on November 26, 2018 just two days short of his 89th birthday. He was a U. S. Navy Veteran of the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion for over forty years.

Survivors include one daughter, Kimberly Rae (Todd) House of Taft; one son, James Olan (Margie) Grabbs of Corpus Christi; one step-daughter, Deborah Jo Wood of Washington; three step-sons, William Arnold (Denise) Wood of Cometa, Mike Wood of Corpus Christi, and James Andrew (Sandra) Wood of Orange Grove; 14 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and numerous nephews, nieces, cousins, and other relatives. Besides his parents and his wife, Mr. Grabbs was also preceded in death by a son, David Gene Grabbs; by a brother, Grady Grabbs; and by a grandson, John Michael Wood.

Pastor Bobby Speer of Clovis, New Mexico will officiate at the services assisted by Rev. Jacob Hunter, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Carrizo Springs and Rev. Ralph Wilson of the First Baptist Church in Carrizo Springs. Interment will be made with full military honors and arrangements are under the direction of the Leonard Funeral Home, a member of the International Order of the Golden Rule.

Serving as pallbearers will be: Gregg Howard, Brooks Howard, Rodney Chitty, Amador Flores, Billy Masar, Jerry Speer, Kenneth Howard, and Charlie Peckenpaugh.

So sorry to hear of Gene Frederick passing. Unfortunately, I did not personally know Gene, but i remember my father and grandfather speaking of Jim Fred. My father was Billy Gene Grabbs, and my grandfather was Robert Grabbs. Our hearts are with the Grabbs family during this time of grief.
