George Flood Obituary

George William Flood, M.D.

Corpus Christi - Enfolded in his beloved Ellen's arms, in their bedroom filled with family, friends and birdsong, George Flood kicked the bucket just after sunset on Palm Sunday, April 14, 2019.

Born in Fond du Lac, WI on January 17, 1930 and raised in Eden, WI, George (a lifelong Packers fan) attended St. Norbert College and Marquette University School of Medicine, where he met Ellen Murphy of Dubuque, IA. They were married on August 20, 1955, soon after he started pediatric residency at Milwaukee Children's Hospital in Wisconsin. In 1956, George was drafted into the U.S. Navy where he served active duty as a lieutenant in the Medical Corps at Great Lakes Naval Hospital in Illinois. In 1959 he completed a year of pediatric psychiatry residency at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, before opening his pediatric practice in Corpus Christi, TX in August, 1959. Dr. Flood retired from his busy private practice in 2002, but worked as a developmental pediatrician and at Driscoll Children's Hospital until his final retirement in May, 2017.

George loved and respected children and their parents, and he believed in the highest ideals of the medical profession, striving to give every patient their best chance at their best life. Diagnosed with Type I diabetes mellitus as a young adult, George was insulin dependent for 65 years, so he understood the challenges faced by many of his patients and empathized with everyone's struggle for health and wholeness. Dr. Flood was beloved by the nurses, administrators and fellow physicians with whom he worked, and his patients often found it difficult to move on to an "adult doctor." He served as Director of the Diabetic Clinic at Driscoll 1977-1981, and he sought to serve the larger Corpus Christi community through his years here by accepting acting medical director, chief of staff, and/or chair of pediatrics responsibilities at Driscoll Children's Hospital, Spohn Hospital and Memorial Hospital. He served as Medical Director for Ada Wilson Hospital 1961-72, and as vice-president of Children's Heart Institute of South Texas 1983-90. He enjoyed mentoring young pediatricians and served as clinical assistant professor at UTMB-Galveston for more than 20 years. He was active in several medical and pediatric professional societies, and directed the Nueces County Rubella Campaign in 1970.

Music was George's passion and he and Ellen enjoyed live performance every chance they got. George served as president of Corpus Christi Symphony 1972-73 and as founding vice-president of Corpus Christi Chamber Music Society 1983-89. He actively promoted children's welfare through his long association with La Leche League and as an early president of Corpus Christi Montessori Society 1963-64. He loved to play golf, hike mountains, travel adventurously and drink margaritas--all with his lovingly supportive Ellen.

George and Ellen have seven children and twenty-five grandchildren who each experienced a full measure of unconditional fatherly love and who all survive: daughter Mary (Paul Nugent) and children Francis, Patrick, Nick, Jack, Anna and Dorothy, of Houston; son Patrick (Laurie Lincoln) and daughters Ina Claire, Ella and Orla, of Anchorage, AK; son Kevin (Kiko Gladsjo) and children Oona and Kai, of San Diego, CA; son Chris (Rene Bennett) and children Maren, Bridey, McGuire and Callan, of Houston; son John (Patti Browning) and children Peter, Mary Ellen, Paul, Molly and Charlie, of Corpus Christi; daughter Maggie (Andrew Herdeg) and children George and Cecilia, of San Antonio; and son Charles (Janet Roush) and sons William, Daniel and Christopher, of Houston. George was preceded in death by his parents Esther (Timblin) and George Flood, and by his beloved brother, Pat Flood, whose wife Marie (Burton) of Longmont, CO and children Brendan (Vanessa Munden) of Asheville, NC and Caitlin (Andrew Moore) of Lyons, CO, survive, as do many nieces and nephews, and his canine buddy, Louie.

In addition to his stalward Ellen, George had wonderful caregivers, nurses, allied health professionals and physicians who cared for him during his final years. The family especially thanks Nelson Encarnacion, Roland Ramirez, Maggie Roberts and Samantha Guajardo for their loving care.

Visitation at Corpus Christi Cathedral on Monday, April 22 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m. with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m. Mass of Resurrection at Corpus Christi Cathedral on Tuesday, April 23, the Feast of St. George, at 10:00 a.m., procession to burial at Seaside Memorial Park. We credit Dr. Flood, as God's tool, for bringing our critically ill newborn thru her health crisis. That event commenced with her birth on the 1st of January, 1972. We were so fond of him and never forgot his caring and healing disposition. May he rest in Peace. Deacon Larry Dunne Diocese of Austin

Dr. Flood was a very special person who took great care of his patients. He always asked us about our 3 children and when they went off to college he was particularly interested in where they went to college, what they were studying and to please say "hello" for him. They, as well as we, held him in great esteem. In our opinion he is enjoying the presence of the Lord, but keeping his eyes and heart focused on those he loved and cared for on this earth. What a truly great man.

No matter the problem, Dr. Flood was there with that wonderful low key, insightful (grand)fatherly demeanor and advice. He was the calm in the middle of the storm. He set the gold standard for what it means to be a pediatrician, father, husband and friend.

And, you had better pay attention because his sense of humor was mischievous, subtle, sly and would catch you off guard. His smirk after a joke was infectious.

Burt Lancaster played the role of Dr. Archibald "Moonlight" Graham in the movie Field of Dreams. His characterization of Dr. Graham reminded, in so many ways, of Dr. Flood. In one scene, Dr. Graham said "This is my most special place in all the world.... Once a place touches you like this, the wind never blows so cold again. You feel for it, like it was your child."

Those of us fortunate enough to have known Dr. Flood understand what that line means. We were all Dr. Flood's children.

We will miss you George.

Dr Flood will be missed by many people. He was such a kind man, compassionate doctor, and good friend. My family loved and respected him tremendously. Especially me. He helped me in so many ways that he never even knew. His soft disposition and vast wisdom will be remembered til the end of time. He is in Heaven with my Mom and Dad and so many more that had a true love for him. I await the day we will all be reunited. I ask The Blessed Mother to wrap her comforting arms around the Flood family at this time of sorrow.

Dr. Flood was my pediatrician & became my employer. He was such a kind & gentle soul. He was like family to us. After he retired he still showed up to our most important family events. He'd still visit my sister & her children in the hospital when they were born. He came to my wedding mass & even attended my youngest brother's documentary screening for Texas A&M just a few years ago. I never understood how he managed to do so much for others & still shower his own family with love. I remember his beautiful roses at the Pediatric Center, if they were blooming he'd come upstairs in the morning with a rose for me & a kiss on the cheek. I absolutely loved him and I know he earned his Saint status.

Eternal rest grant to him, O Lord; and let light perpetual shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Oh gosh , Dr. Flood . We have lost a great professional , loving, considerate and positive children's and at times a doctors positive attitude to the parents of ill or injured children. I remember so well when I was called to your office due to my son , Billy while playing with a mother accidentally cause him to require a few stitches on his forehead.I thought I would have to go to an emergency room before going to Your Office where you were stitching Billy. It was just a few stitches, nevertheless it was the firstserious injury Billy went through. You made me feel much better when I arrived The almost invisible scar is still on Billy's forehead. My condolences to each member of your family. And just you will know, my son Billy , now an adult was probably blessed by Dr. Flood's good care of those emergency stitches,. Not too long Billy earned a Doctorate. Many Thanks to Dr. Flood family for sharing him with my son and many, many other children he helped.Norma Jean Sierra

I was one of those patients who was told i was too old to see Dr. Flood anymore. George Flood was one of those awesome people in your life you never forget. My family and I were fortunate enough to not only know Dr. Flood professionally, but we grew up knowing the kids and family. Peace George, know only happiness now. Be Free of all earthly worries. Heaven is a better place with you being the newest Angel.

Dr. Flood will always hold a very special place in my heart. In 1971, his excellent care saved my premature daughter's life and ensured her completely healthy outcome. He called me with a progress report every single day for the 50 days she was in the hospital. His calm, steady voice was a reassurance to my family during that worrisome time. Corpus has been so lucky to have such a fine man and wonderful doctor in their community for so many years. My sincere heartfelt condolences to his family.
