JUNE HICKMAN Obituary

HICKMAN June C. Hickman peacefully passed away January 16, 2009. She was born in Montclair, NJ to John & Marjorie Bellows on May 13, 1926 and attended Bronxville High School NY and Wagner College, Staten Island, NY. She was a practical nurse during the war, and maintained high standards of care throughout her life for those she loved. June married Jesse E Hickman October 15, 1946 amongst their young friends in NY. Together they created countless extraordinary life experiences for their family and life time friends; traveling, entertaining, time on their boat cruising the East Coast and ultimately settling on Padre Island. Jesse passed away one month short of their 57th wedding anniversary. A meticulous homemaker and most gracious hostess, she was an avid reader with a thirst for knowledge; she was one of the first participants to take college courses over the television in the early 60's. She loved the outdoors, was an exercise enthusiast throughout her life including exercises with Jack LaLane, and found great happiness gardening. June was a generous spirit who preferred anonymity, for years she visited and ran errands for inbound strangers and was always knitting hats and scarves for the homeless, she was driven by the act not the recognition. A loyal friend, she was the one who could be counted on when the chips were down, and many did. Her quick wit was keenly cultivated, and a good laugh was her best medicine, no matter what the circumstance. She was preceded in death by her mother, father, husband and just three weeks earlier, son, John Charles Hickman. She is survived by James E Hickman (Jill) Austin, TX, Jane E Guinn (Lee) Rockport, TX, Grandchildren John C Hickman II, New Braunfels,TX, Cynthia Dufrense (Michael) San Antonio, TX, Kaitlyn Hickman Dolan, Austin, TX, Trey Guinn, The Netherlands, Colin Guinn, Austin, TX, Audrey Guinn, Lexington, KY and Kathryn Guinn, Fort Collins, CO. Great grand daughters Hannah Dufrense and Montana Guinn as well as great grand son, Achilles Guinn. June was a former member of the Bronxville League for Service, St. Georges By The Sea Episcopal Church Canterbury Fair Chair, Forrestdale Elementary Parent Newsletter Editor, Padre Island Enrichment Society and a Charter Member of Island Presbyterian and a current member of St. Peter's Episcopal in Rockport, TX. June's family extend abundant gratitude to those who supported her spirit, humor and comfort during the last months of her life, specifically; Island Presbyterian Church's Prayer Circle, Aim Hospice (Frances, Judi, Rebecca and Denise) Gulfpointe Village (Yvonne, Linda, Pat and all the sweet staff) St. Peter's Episcopal Church, her neighbors on the Island and Kristopher Richardson, PA, Sheila Lester, LVN, Anna Garcia, Susan Price, Brenda Salone, Dr. Sarah Aloudat and all the professional staff of Longevity & Wellness Center of S TX. An incredibly private person, she requested a simple graveside service, which is scheduled to be held at Seaside, Saturday, January 24, 2009 at noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Wagner College or St. Peter's Church ' or the non profit of your choice.
