WARBURTON Alice, TexasLawrence H. Warburton Jr. passed away peacefully on June 8, 2010 at the age of 83. Larry Warburton was born in San Diego, California on September 6, 1926 to Lawrence and Estelane Warburton. He married Jeanelle Golden on September 3, 1955 in Austin, Texas. His wife, Jeanelle, predeceased him on June 1, 2003. He is survived by three sons, Pat Warburton of Sugar Land, Texas, Bill Warburton of Austin, Texas and Lane Warburton of Austin, Texas. He also has a daughter-in-law, Kim Warburton and two grandchildren, Sarah Warburton and Travis Warburton all of Sugar Land, Texas He is survived by a sister, Shirley Newhouse and two brothers, Bruce Warburton and Stanley Warburton. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews. In his youth, he attended school in Freer, Texas and also the Peacock Military Academy. In August 1944, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in San Diego, California where he attended boot camp and Quartermaster Schools and was selected to participate in the Navy V-12 Program through which he attended the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California and the University of California at Berkeley. Upon his discharge from the Navy, he entered the University of Texas at Austin from which he received a BBA degree in 1949 and a LLB in 1950. While at the University of Texas, he was elected Chief Justice of the Student Court and was president of Alpha Omega. He also was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon and the Silver Spurs. L. H. Warburton, Jr. opened his Law Office in Freer, Texas in 1950, where he practiced for four years before joining the Texas Attorney General's Office. While working for the Attorney General, one of his assignments was the investigation of the Veteran Land Board Scandals. He left the Attorney General's Office to become an Assistance District Attorney of the 79th Judicial District from 1955 to 1960. In 1960 he joined the law firm of Perkins, Floyd and Davis and was associated with their successor firms. He became the Senior Partner of the firm of Warburton, Adami, McNeill, Paisley and Appell, P.C. and remained there until his retirement in the year 2000, after 50 years of practicing law. L. H. Warburton, Jr. was active in civic affairs serving on the Gulf Coast Council Board of the Boy Scouts of America and the Alice Rotary Club, where he served a term as President. He taught Sunday School and was a Member of the Board of Stewards of the First United Methodist Church of Alice. He also served as President of the Alice Junior Chamber of Commerce and Chairman of the United Fund for Alice, Texas. He served as a member of the board of the Nueces River Authority. In addition to his civic contributions, L. H. Warburton, Jr. also served several legal organizations. He served as President of the Coastal Bend Bar Association, a Director of The State Bar of Texas, a member of the board of the Texas Lawyer's Insurance Exchange, Chairman of the Texas Bar Journal Committee (1972-1979), and selected to be Chairman of the Fellows of the Texas Bar Foundation. Later in his career, the Governor of Texas appointed him to serve as a member on the board of the Nueces River Authority.Among his personal achievements, he was selected as one of the 'Five Outstanding Young Texans' by the Texas Junior Chamber of Commerce in 1960, was an Eagle Scout, and was awarded a Silver Beaver by the Boy Scouts of America. He had also been a Directors of the Brush Country Bank of Freer, Texas and President of the Port Royal Condominium Owners Association. His publishing accomplishments include a number of articles for the Texas Bar Journal on practice and on historical subjects. He gave five papers at the Texas Folklore Society and also had his article, 'The Plan of San Diego' published in the South Texas Historical Journal.In addition to his other accomplishments, he enjoyed 30 years of raising cattle and wildlife on his ranch in Duval County.Through his professional and personal dedication, L. H. Warburton, Jr. had a positive and lasting effect on many lives in his community. His caring and generosity will be greatly missed by all that were fortunate enough to know him.Visitation will be Sunday, June 13, 2010 from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at Holmgreen Mortuary. Graveside services will be conducted Monday, June 14, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. in the Alice Cemetery.In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church in Alice.
