LITA FUENTES Obituary

Lita Gomez Fuentes

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX

Lita Gomez Fuentes passed away peacefully at home on Friday, October 20, 2017, at the age of 84, surrounded by her family.

She was born in Mirando City, Texas on December 25, 1932. She graduated from Corpus Christi High School in 1949. She graduated from Texas A&I University in Kingsville with a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education in 1953, and received her Masters in Education there in 1955.

Lita met the love of her life, Antonio Fuentes, in Corpus Christi. They married on August 31, 1952 and just recently celebrated 65 years of marriage together. After completing her Masters degree, Lita taught first and second grade at George Evans Elementary School. She was one of the pioneer Bilingual Education Teachers for Corpus Christi Independent School District. Lita then moved to Monterrey, Mexico and taught at the American School Foundation. Upon returning to Corpus Christi, Lita taught at Prescott Elementary School for many years.

Lita supported Tony during all of his medical education and training. The family settled in Corpus Christi where Tony started his medical practice in the early 1960's. She then devoted herself to raising her family and being socially active in the community. She was active for many years with Most Precious Blood Catholic Church.

Lita was involved in many organizations over the years. She belonged to the Sceptre Club, Sembradores de Amistad, American Association of University Women, Hispanic Women's Network of Texas, where she received the Las Estrellas de Tejas Award, Nueces County Medical Society Alliance, Garden Club, and played with many Bunco groups. She was an Emeritus Board member for CASA of the Coastal Bend. Lita was crowned Ms. Coastal Bend Senior in 2002, and continued to participate with the pageant for many years. She was an avid traveller, visiting the Caribbean, Hawaii, the Holy Land, Europe , and China. She played tennis. She loved to dance, go to parties, attend meetings, and bunco. She loved to be with her sisters. She loved being with her children, grandchildren, and the "Gomez Clan". She never missed a party or a sale. But mostly loved being with Tony.

Lita is survived by her loving husband Dr. Antonio Fuentes, her five children, Dr. Randy (Cecilia) Fuentes, Dr. Michael (Norma) Fuentes, Patrick Eric (Rosemary) Fuentes, Karen Fuentes, Monica (James) Zahn. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Sara Fuentes, Leah (Matthew) Honeycutt, Michael Fuentes, Jr., Meghan Fuentes, Antonio Fuentes and Isabella Fuentes, Dustin Fuentes, Hunter Fuentes, Savannah Flores and Patrick Eric Fuentes, II, and Klaryssa Fuentes. She is also survived by her siblings Felita Allred, Diane Wilmoth, Dee (Aron) Alexander, Cindy Jorgensen, Jesse (Bea) Gomez, Linda Ballard, Idie (Neil) Johnson, Glenda (Alonzo) Garcia, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Special friends Annie Garcia, Peggy May, and Gregoria Nunez.

Lita is preceded in death by her parents, Jesus and Genoveva Gomez and her siblings, Ruben Gomez and Dora Salinas.

In high school we would all hang out at Randy's house - Mrs. Fuentes was such a lot of fun and always had a smile. She was a loving Mom and we enjoyed her warmth and humor. Our condolences to Randy, Michael and the family. She was such a treasure, she will be missed.
