Moises Chapa Obituary
Dr. Moises C. Chapa, 67, beloved husband, father and grandfather, died Saturday, January 3, 2004 in his home with his family at his side. Dr. Chapa was born on December 11, 1936 in Alice, Texas. He received his Bachelor's degree from the University of Texas at Austin and was a proud member of the Texas Longhorn Band. He received a Master's degree in music from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago and a Master's degree in School Administration from Texas A&I University. He returned to the University of Texas at Austin in 1974 and received his Ph.D. in Education Administration in 1977. He was proud to have served his country when he joined the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged after serving 9 years. His professional career began with the Alice ISD as the first band director for Memorial Junior High School. In that same capacity, he was also employed by the Benavides ISD and La Puente CISD in California. The highlight of his career as a Band director was having had two world reknown virtuosos perform with the La Puente ISD band, Sigurd Rasher, Saxophone Virtuoso and Rafael Mendez, Trumpet Virtuoso. Upon returning to Texas, he was subsequently employed by Dallas ISD, Harlandale ISD in San Antonio, Austin ISD and Robstown ISD in administrative capacities. At the time of his death, he was owner of Energy Management Consultants and employed by the Edinburg CISD. Dr. Chapa was preceded in death by his parents, Moises E. Chapa and Corine Chapa and an infant daughter, Maricela Garcia Chapa. He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Viola Garcia Chapa of Edinburg, and three daughters: Loretta (Roberto) Gallaga of Harlingen, Nicole Davila of San Antonio and Marla Chapa of Edinburg; a brother, David C. Chapa (Consuelo) of Flower Mound and two sisters-in-law, Lydia (John G.) Gonzalez of Alice and Lucila Saenz of Laredo; one granddaughter, Angelica Gallaga of Harlingen; three grandsons, Roberto Gallaga, Jr. of Harlingen, Henry Davila and Alejandro Davila both of San Antonio and numerous nephews and nieces. A quiet and gentle man, he was devoted to his family and will be dearly missed. The family will be receiving guests from 4:00 P.M. to 9:00 P.M. on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 at Chapel A, Ruben M. Garcia & Sons Funeral Service, with Rosary following at 7:00 P.M. Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Alice, Texas. Interment will follow at the New Collins Cemetery in Alice, Texas. Honorary Pallbearers are: R. David Guerra of McAllen, John G. Gonzalez of Alice, Dr. John Martinez of Midland, Dr. Jay Mulkey of San Antonio, Dr. Bruno Ybarra of Austin, Ruben Cavazos of Corpus Christi and Fidel Rul of Alice. Pallbearers are: Roberto Gallaga, Sr. of Harlingen, Paul Saenz of Laredo, Roman Rodriguez, Jr. of San Antonio, Joel Gonzalez of Corpus Christi, David Gonzalez of Calallen and Bobby Garcia of Alice.
