Marguerite Kathleen Scales LaughlinPremont, TXMarguerite Kathleen Scales Laughlin of Premont, Texas left this life on Thursday, the 17th of January 2013. She was born December 25, 1916 in Michigan City, Indiana to Rose and Otis Scales. Marguerite moved to Alpine, Texas in 1920 where her father and uncle owned and operated the Kandy Kitchen. Marguerite received a B.A. in English and Music from Sul Ross State Teacher's College in 1937 and began her teaching career in Alice, Texas in the fall of that year. It was in Alice, Texas that Marguerite met her husband, Charles Woodrow Laughlin to whom she was married for forty five years. Judge Laughlin died in 1984. Mrs. Laughlin taught school for over twenty years in Alice, Texas and Premont, Texas. She earned a masters degree from Texas A & I (Texas A & M Kingsville). She was an accomplished musician and served for many years as the organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Alice, Texas and in Premont, Texas.Marguerite is survived by her daughter Shirley (Charles) Roxburgh of Houston, Texas; her son Woody (Rosemary) Laughlin of Littleton, Colorado; her granddaughter Leslie (Ken Jillson) Hamner of Zephyr Cove, Nevada; her grandson Scott (Christine) Hamner of Summit, New Jersey; and her grandson Chad Laughlin of Santa Cruz, California. Mrs. Laughlin was loved as 'Mimi' by her great grandchildren: Olive, Fitz, Otis, Stellan and Mac.The family express their gratitude to Anita Saenz, Lucy Ortiz, Rosie Gonzalez, Debi Quintanilla, and Linda Sanchez for the loving care they provided Marguerite. A memorial service in celebration of Marguerite's life will be conducted at 3:00 in the afternoon on Monday, the 21st of January, in the sanctuary of First Methodist Church, Premont. Pastor Wendy Nave will officiate assisted by Pastor J. J. Wicke. Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private interment at the Premont Cemetery.In lieu of customary remembrances, the family requests with gratitude that memorial contributions in Mrs. Laughlin's name be directed to the Otis Scales & Shirley Scales Endowment for Sul Ross State University, P.
