Ila Campbell Obituary
Ila Treva (Terri) Campbell was born in a small farming community in Copeland, Kansas on January 30, 1930. She lived her early years during the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl. She learned very early the value of hard work and overcoming hardship. Her father, William Nusser, was a farmer and blacksmith. Her mother, Marie, was a homemaker and a teacher. Terri was number eight of twelve children. On the farm, Terri became a very proficient combine harvester operator at a very young age. She aspired to be as skilled and hard working as her dad in work and leisure time. Terri was always fiercely independent and lived and worked in a number of states when she left the farm to go out on her own. Terri finally settled in Colorado and her early jobs included an Arthur Murray dance instructor, bartending, and waitressing. Mom was very adventuresome in early years, loved fast cars and racing Pikes Peak and Ute Pass, unsanctioned of course. More than anything, Terri enjoyed working for herself and was a business owner and operator for almost 60 years. First as an owner and beautician of the La Petite Hair Salon. After retiring from hairdressing, she bought and developed the Skyline Motel and various rental properties in Canon City. She was very accomplished, working often times with very little money all the while, raising three children by herself after two brief marriages. Mom loved all the colorful characters that came and went while residing and running the Skyline Motel. Mom always considered the motel her home and lived there for 46 years, passing peacefully in her home on March 25, 2022. Mom loved to travel to Europe, Asia, the Caribbean, Hawaii, Mexico, Canada, and many parts of the US. In later years, she loved those slot machines in Cripple Creek and wanted to go every chance she got. Also loved putting together puzzles and playing gospel songs on the piano into her late eighties. When a family member got themselves in a crisis, Mom could be counted on to help. Mom was very action oriented to immediately address and solve the problem first. Plenty of time for lecturing later if necessary but let's resolve the problem first. Terri is survived by her children, Mark (Betsy) Campbell, Paula Campbell, and Troy Campbell; grandchildren, Courtney Campbell and Cole Campbell; great-grandchild, Xena Campbell. Terri is also survived by one sister, Lucille Devine. Mrs. Campbell has requested no funeral or service. A Celebration of Life will be scheduled at a later time.
