Alexander Otani Obituary
Alexander Toshio Otani, age 18, of Massillon, passed away tragically in an automobile accident on Saturday, July 1, 2006 in Cincinnati, OH. Born in Canton, OH, Tosh graduated from Central Catholic High School, Class of 2005 and was attending Ohio State University. At OSU, he was a Student Government Intern, Member of Special Projects Committee for the Ohio Union Activities Board, Programming Chair for the Seibert Hall Counsel, Recipient of the Outstanding First Year Experience Award, and the Honors Programs for Chemical Engineering. He was currently serving as an engineering intern with Proctor & Gamble for the summer. He was an avid rock climber and ultimate frisbee player. Survived by his mother, Catherine and husband, Randy Stenhouse; father, Richard and wife, Becky Otani; sister and best friend, Alissa "Fumi" Otani; brothers, Alex and Zachery; grandparents, Peter and Marcella Drakulich, Richard and Evelyn Otani Sr., and many, many, many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. The Funeral Mass for all who wish to attend, will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. Calling hours will be Thursday from 5-9 p.m. and Friday from 1-4 and 6-9 p.m. in the Schneeberger Funeral Home, 2222 Fulton Rd. N.W., Canton, OH 44709. The family requests memorials be mailed to "The Alexander Toshio Otani Memorial Scholarship Fund" at Key Bank, 4495 Everhard Rd. N.W., Canton, OH 44718 or may be taken to any Key Bank branch location.

Although I have not seen any of you in quite a few years I was at a complete loss of words when my mom told me of Alex's tragic accident. I can only remember Alex as a little boy running around playing with my brother but from the sounds of things he really blossomed into a very intellegent and will respected young man. I'm sure that no words right now can expess the sorrow that you are feeling but the day will come that you will be able to celebrate Alex's life and be so happy and proud of the awesome young person that you raised. We did not have the privilege of meeting Tosh but our daughter was friends with him at OSU. She has spoken highly of him and felt honored to have known him. It appears he had that affect on everyone as we read other guest book entries. He obviously made you quite proud and the world will be missing a young man who would have contributed so much. Although we met him only once at the OSU FEH Robot/Nano Competition, it was obvious how kind and intelligent he was. He took the time to explain in detail (his project) to a six year old. This six year old will probably grow up to be just like Tosh; smart, funny, kind and willing to share all he has learned with others.

I just barely knew Tosh but he meant so much to me and so easily put a smile on my face. He had that effect on everyone who knew him. I feel honored to have know him as casually and briefly as I did. Tosh will most certainly be remembered and God has great plans for him still.

I knew Tosh the slightest bit because I was in FEH at Ohio State as well, but I first met him in high school when I had to debate against him every once in a while. I remember being frustrated with him on two counts--that I could never beat him and that I couldn't really dislike him because he was always a class act when I would talk to him outside of rounds. He had a fire inside that I still remember now, two years later, and he had the respect and admiration of this debater. Please accept my deepest sympathies for your loss. Alex had a great atmosphere to grow in, with an amazing loving family. They are a great part, in giving the most amazing person I have ever had the pleasure of knowing to this world. Everyone is proud of Tosh. He deserves to be kept alive as much as possible in us all, it can only be benificial. He never wastes a second by always giving, which is truely phenomenal. He gave up things he loved to make the world a better place. He never didnt appreciate all the gifts he had in life. That is why he tried to give as much as possible. He loved his family in a way I have yet to see anywhere else. He cared, worried, and thanked them for everything... he took everything they gave him as an amazing gift, never acting like he expected it. No body lights up a room quite like him. Above all else he loved life, and tried to get us all to find the same joy he found in it. I thank his family for letting me get the pleasure of his and their company in my life. Tosh was a classmate of mine at OSU and a phenomenal inspiration. To reiterate what so many others also experienced, Tosh always had a smile and a laugh for me. Although I did not know Alex personally, my daughter Erin Eighan counted him as one of her dearest friends. She was with him at Central for the 2002-2003 school and we moved to Minnesota after that. She saw him for a "breakfast date" when she returned to Ohio last summer. She told me, upon hearing of his passing, that he was one of the finest individuals she has ever known. Not only was he smart and bright, but such an honorable and good person. His passing greatly saddened her and she will remember him forever with wonderful memories of him.
