Andrew Foy Obituary

Andrew Knight Foy
Died Sunday August 16, 2009. He was born August 27, 1924, a son of the late Francis M. Foy and Genevieve Lynch Foy. He married Mary Merilyn Snyder in 1954 and together they had six children.
The late Mrs. Foy died in 1975, but Andrew is survived by his children and their spouses, Chris and Paula Foy of Wooster, Ohio, Kevin Foy and Nancy Feder of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Jeremy Foy of Concord, New Hampshire, Anthony and Andrea Margida of Alliance, Ohio, Greg and Leigh Foy of York, Pennsylvania, Steve and Celia Esber of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Thirteen grandchildren also survive him. His brothers, John and Frank and his sister, Mary Louise are no longer living. He was very close to his nephew, F. Martin Foy, III and wife, Kathleen of Westlake, Ohio.
Andrew Foy graduated from St. Ignatius High School and John Carroll University in Cleveland, Ohio. He served as a second lieutenant in the Army Air Force during World War II, spending time in China and India. After the war, he worked in the tool & die business and later in the auto and steel industry. He moved his family to a Holmes County, Ohio, farm in the 1960s, raising livestock and crops. He became interested in alternative energy, and in the 1970's built an ethanol plant at the family farm. After his wife's death, he moved to Hawaii where he became involved again in business, purchasing and managing a food manufacturing company. Andrew moved back to a rural setting in his late working years, managing a horse farm in upstate New York. Although he struggled with multiple sclerosis for thirty-five years, he had an extraordinary generosity of spirit and optimism about life. He loved discussing politics and books; he thought nothing was impossible, and was known to observe, in counseling not to shrink from difficult challenges, that "anybody could do it if they had the money." He was charming and gracious, but also frank and forthright. Among those who will miss him dearly is his companion dog, Hailey, who was by his side for the last six years and also had an unusually large and diverse number of friends.
Mass in celebration of the life of Andrew Knight Foy will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2009 at Sacred Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Louisville, Ohio. Contributions in lieu of flowers can be made to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

A memory I still cherish was Uncle Drew, my godfather, taking me to see Peter Pan, one of the earliest movies I remember attending.

Foy cousins,
Our love, thoughts, and prayers are with you all during this time. So glad I got to visit your dad this spring. I loved both your parents a bunch! Your dad was my godfather and your mom was my confirmation sponsor. I loved all our family gatherings, and especially enjoyed coming down to the farm on my own when I could drive. I seldom thought of only one. It was always "Dickie and Drew." And now they are together again. See you Sept. 12.

Dear Kevin, Chris, Jeremy, Andrea, Greg, and Celia: My heart goes out to all of you and to your entire family. Your dad was a great guy, and I have many fond memories of him. He always greeted me warmly and treated me with respect, even when I was just a kid a few years out of school. Although it has been many years since I last saw him, I can still picture him vividly and hear his voice clearly in my memory. I always knew how proud he was of each one of you. May the memories of all the wonderful times you had together as a family ease the pain of your loss. With much fondness and ALOHA, "Harold"

The Boswell family is saddened by the loss of your loving father. He will live long in my many fun memories of "The Foy's Farm." My life would certainly be a lot different had I not known all of the Foy family. I am so glad I got to see your father 2 years ago. He will rest in peace knowing what a amazing family he has left behind to continue his kindness and family values. My love, prayers and thoughts are with you all.

God Bless, Megen Boswell

The Gorman family sends love and prayers to all the Foys as we share with you the sadness of losing your dear father. I have many wonderful memories of spending summer holidays at your farm with large groups of friends, enjoying potlucks and picnics, playing softball and volleyball, and relaxing under the big old shade trees on the farmhouse lawn. God bless you and comfort you and give you peace at this time. Your dad has fought the good fight and is blessed to be eternally happy now. The great legacy of Drew Foy continues to live on in his children and grandchildren. ~ In sympathy and friendship, Mary Anne (Gorman) Cunningham
