Sister Helen Mary Peter, SND 1923-2015
Sister Helen Mary (formerly Sister Mary Nivard) died Nov. 8 at Geauga Hospital. Sister was born August 10, 1923, in Canton, Ohio, and was known for her compassionate response to the needs of all she encountered. She proclaimed the loving goodness and providence of God through teaching and faith formation. Sister ministered as an educator for forty-four years in high schools in California and Ohio and at Notre Dame College, South Euclid. She then served as pastoral minister, youth minister and Director of Religious Education for eighteen years. Sister Helen Mary treasured her family and friends and the beauty of all creation. With her smile of warm welcome, her gentle manner and her interest and care for others, Sister gave witness to the God who lived within.
Cherished aunt of Clayton (Terry) Purdy, Helen (Andy) Franko, Colette (Paul) Weathers, Bobbie (Ron) Krukowski, Mary (Bob) Read, Colleen (Doug) Ober, Eric (JoAnne) Peter, Mickey Fay, Frank Purdy and Margo Peter; loving great-aunt of many; and sister to the congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame with whom she shared her life for 71 years. Sister Helen Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Mary (nee Leahy) Peter and siblings, Richard, Frank and Colette (Robert, deceased) Purdy; nephew, Scott Peter, and niece, Christine Purdy.
Friends may call at the Center on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m., and on Saturday from 9-10:15 a.m. A Mass of Christian Burial for Sister Helen Mary will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 14, at Notre Dame Education Center, 13000 Auburn Road, Chardon. The burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery on the Notre Dame Education Center grounds. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Sisters of Notre Dame. Arrangements by DeJohn-Flynn-Mylott Funeral Home.

Sister Mary Nivard and I had the pleasure of teaching together in the Parish School of Religion at St. Rita in Solon when Father Tom Flynn was serving there. What a thoughtful delightful person and inspiring religious woman. May God reward her for her many years of faithful witness and love.
