JAMES DUNLAP Obituary

James G. Dunlap 1949-2018

Age 68, of Minerva, died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018 in his home following a short illness. He was born Feb. 4, 1949 in Canton to the late Charles and Marjorie (Wilson) Dunlap. He was a printer for Minerva Wax Paper and later for Buckeye Packaging prior to retirement. He is a US Army Veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a truly gifted tennis player, playing for over 40 years, and was an active member of the Hall of Fame Tennis Club. He was a master of random acts of kindness, and always tried to make everyone he encountered feel special in some way. After tennis, his second passion was music, old and new.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Jeannette (Miller) Dunlap. He is survived by a sister, Cindy Hart of Ellijay, Ga.; a nephew, Shawn Hart of Blue Ridge, Ga.; a niece, Chandra Hart of Strongsville, Ohio; a great-nephew, and great-nieces.

Those who knew Jim will not be surprised that there are no formal services. Following cremation, burial will be in Sandy Valley Cemetery in Waynesburg. Those wishing to share condolences may sign the online register at www.gotschallfuneralhome.com.

We were so sad and sorry to hear that Jim passed. We just saw him at the tennis courts not long ago. He was a great guy, and we will always remember the fun times we had playing tennis with him and Jeannette when we were all young. Prayers for them both and their families too... I grew up with Jim, he was the boy next door that would always wait to walk me home if I missed the bus, just so I wouldn't be alone. I have so many fond memories of dancing, listening to music, hide and seek, doing so many fun things as children/teenagers do. Jim was one of my friends that I still kept in contact with after all these years. Cindy, my heart goes out to you, and I hope you know that your friendship, Jim's friendship, and also your mothers, is one that I will always cherish. God Bless you!

It was such a privilege to know Jim. His gentlemanly ways and happy disposition made him a joy to be around. You could be Jim's partner and playing your worst tennis and he would make you feel like you were doing great with a smile, a chuckle or a fist bump. Summer tennis at Harvard courts won't be the same without Jim. I don't know of anyone who didn't think he was a wonderful person.

Jim was one of the kindest men I have ever known. Always in a good mood and always positive. I know that I am blessed to have shared the tennis court with him and our friend, Dave, for many years. Both gone too soon. I will cherish those fond memories and the fun we had.

"Gentleman Jim" is gone and none of us who played with him in our Sunday/Wednesday tennis group can believe it. His shocking death has affected all of us in some way. He was the anchor and "cruise director" of our group who welcomed everyone who showed up to play his favorite game. Jim will be sorely missed, but rest assured the good Lord has an "ace" in his midst now.
