Joseph Grimes Obituary

Joseph Ray Grimes "Together Again"

age 95, of Minerva, passed away and went to be with the Lord on May 24, 2021 while at Arbors of Minerva. Joe was born in Minerva on March 4, 1926 to Clarence "Kenny" Grimes and Edna (Morehead) Grimes and lived his entire life in the Village of Minerva. Joe worked at Good Roads Machinery for 25 years when it was in Minerva and later as an industrial engineer for the Hoover Company in North Canton where he retired in 1989. He met and married his loving wife Shirley (Slingluff) while working at Good Roads Machinery and they celebrated 67 years of marriage last August. Shirley recently preceded him in death on April 29, 2021.

Joe was a member of the Minerva First Christian Church where he served as an ordained Elder, a Sunday School teacher for over six decades, a lay speaker and held many other positions. More recently he was a member of the First Christian Church of Malvern. Joe also served many years as a little league baseball coach in Minerva, the commissioner for other ball leagues and umpired/refereed for area baseball, softball and basketball games. When Joe was younger, he was an avid bowler and in 1952 rolled the first 299 game at the bowling alley in Minerva and was given a ring from the American Bowling Congress to commemorate the occasion.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Richard, and Kenneth "Pete" Grimes and two sisters, Bettie Weaver and Mildred Johnson. Surviving siblings are his brother, Gerald Grimes and sister, Jean Ferguson. Also surviving are sons, Michael (Mei-Hui) Grimes of North Canton, Kevin (Kim) Grimes of Lima; daughter, Kendra (Lanny) Peterson of Carrollton; grandchildren, David and Matthew Grimes, Kaitlin Haugh, Jake Peterson and Kaeri and Kristen King; and five great-grandchildren.

To honor his requests there will be no calling hours. A private family service will be held at the East Lawn Cemetery with Lead Minister Kenny Thomas of the First Christian Church of Malvern officiating. Those wishing to send condolences may sign the online register at www.gotschallfuneralhome.com.

Mike, Kevin, Kendra and Families ~

When two lives are so tightly wrapped in love, kindness, service to others, and a deep faith, it is no surprise that Shirley's crossing of the finish line here on earth would pull Joe right along with her. The energy bond was certainly that strong. Even God did not want to get in the way. :) Joe's love of sports, especially baseball and softball, was his gift that he gave back in the form of playing and serving the game. His faith combined with that love in order for his service to always be about the "greater good". What a "champion" on so many levels!

We send our prayers of support, of celebration of a life well-lived, and our encouragement as you begin life without the physical presence of mom and dad.

With care ~
