Karen Marek Obituary

Karen Dorman Marek

On June 27, 2020, Dr. Karen Dorman Marek passed away peacefully with her daughters at her side in Scottsdale, AZ. She was 65 years old. Karen was a compassionate spirit whose passion was caring for others. She was a 1973 Washington High School graduate. She received a diploma from the Idabelle Firestone School of Nursing and while working, earned BSN, and MSN degrees from the University of Akron, and an MBA and PhD from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee. At the time of her passing, she was the Bernita 'B' Steffl Professor of Geriatric Nursing in the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University. Her research focused on community-based care models for aging adults. She was a proud feminist and advocated and marched for equality and healthcare for all. Karen adored being outside and would often be found on her paddleboard or biking the Oak Leaf Trail. She loved to hike and explore the outdoors with her daughters and grandchildren.

Karen is survived by her husband of 43 years, Gerald; her three daughters: Heather of Phoenix, AZ, Laurel of St. Francis, WI, Anne of Dunedin, New Zealand; six grandchildren; brother, Bill Dorman of Massillon; and two rescue kitties.

Karen had such an impact on nursing, she was part of the Magnet appraiser family for several years. Her participation in the teams she was on, the organizations she reviewed, and the Magnet program contributed to raising the bar for nursing.
She will be missed by all that had the privilege to know her.

Your family has given her a lovely tribute, I am sure she would be proud! It seems like yesterday we were all in the PhD program. Karen's smile, energy, and efforts to make the world better are missed!

Karen and I worked together at UWM - we became fast friends - I loved her irreverence and passion for questioning the status quo. She loved life - and most of all, her family. She worked tirelessly to create a better world for them. I will miss her deeply. One of my favorite memories is when she stayed at my home for the Women's March. We had such a blast!

Karen and I have been friends since the start of our doctoral program in 1987. We worked as research assistants for various faculty. Karen worked for Dr. Norma Lang. Since both of us lost our mothers at a young age, we adopted Norma as our "mother". Karen's family became an adopted family for me when I spent 2 years in Milwaukee. She encouraged me to apply for the Robert Wood Johnson Nurse Executive Fellowship. We both were accepted and enjoyed our ongoing friendship through this venue. Karen loved her family and was highly engaged with them both as a parent, partner, and friend. She will be missed.

I often was in class at Wild Workouts with Karen. She always made the class fun with her complaints, jokes and observations. We were both snowbird members; Karen headed to AZ and I headed to FL. I will miss her. ❤ My sympathy to Karens family. I dont know you, but from knowing Karen, I know that she leaves a missing piece to your family puzzle. I also know she left you with many happy memories to help ease the pain and help you remember her.
