Robert Gschwend Obituary

Robert VanNoort Gschwend
Bob Gschwend died May 18, 2014 at the age of 91 in Cabot, Butler County, Penn. He was born in Canton, Ohio, July 14, 1922, the son of Leo and Katherine Hinchliffe Gschwend. His mother died in 1928, and he was raised by his father and his aunts and uncles in the family home on Market Avenue North. Further, he was nurtured by his maternal aunt, Mary Hinchliffe Belden who resided one block north of the Gschwends. For his lifetime, he affectionately referred to his aunt as 'Mama Mame'.
Bob attended St. Peter's School and McKinley High School. College years at the University of Notre Dame were interrupted by WWII. Bob served as an officer in the USN Finance Corps, with sea duty in the Atlantic, Mediterranean and Pacific Theatres. Following release from active duty he returned to college and completed his degree. His post war years were spent in the employ of the U.S. State Department in Germany, allowing him to travel throughout Western Europe. He was then recalled to active duty in the Navy during the Korean War and stationed on Guam Island. At this time he had many duty related trips throughout the Far East. Upon discharge he had brief employment in Columbia, South America. He then moved to New York City to pursue his career in Finance. In 1960 he moved to Los Angeles, CA to work for the Bank of America until his retirement at age 65. In retirement, he maintained his residence in several different cities as he repeatedly travelled over the entire world.
He was predeceased by his brother, Paul in 1980; and by his great niece, Katherine Hinchliffe Gschwend, in 2011. He is survived by his nephew, Paul Gschwend, M.D. of Lancaster, Penn.; his great niece, Jennifer Gschwend McGough; and by a cousin, Mary Josephine Hinchliffe, in Clifton, N.J.
Services and interment were carried out according to his instructions in Butler, Penn. This Bon Vivant, world traveler, and occasional curmudgeon will be remembered fondly by any who knew him. Any condolences may be sent to his nephew at 110 N. Yale Ave., Lancaster, PA 17603.
