Robert Kilpatrick Obituary

Robert E. "Kil" Kilpatrick

September 8, 1951 – March 26, 2021

69, of Perry Township, passed away March 26, 2021. He was born in Canton, Ohio, to Katherine Jane (Browning) Kilpatrick and Eugene Jack Kilpatrick. He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Cathy (Reichard) Kilpatrick; his mother and father-in-law, Gene and Mary Reichard; sister, Karen (Brenda) Stilgenbauer; son, Bobby (Jamie) Kilpatrick; son, Brian (Jacquie) Kilpatrick; daughter, Molly (Bryan) Janosek; grandchildren, Caden, Riley, Kasey, and Tyler Kilpatrick: Jackson and Rylan Janosek. He was a 1969 graduate of Perry High School and a 1973 graduate of Bowling Green University.

If there is a synonym for Kil, it has to be passion – for his family, community, students, and friends. All of his written communications he signed with a hand-drawn red heart and a "Go Perry!" For any significant events, everyone expected one of his poems initiating laughter and sometimes a few tears. Bob retired from Perry Local Schools in 2010 after teaching and coaching for thirty-five years. During his career he coached football, basketball, and tennis. In 2011 he was inducted into the Perry Athletic Hall of Fame for which he later served as president. His passion for teaching helped him receive a 1994 scholarship through Northeastern University to attend a summer workshop at Martha's Vineyard where he quickly earned recognition for his stories and football analogies. He loved his students and athletes, but insisted on teaching them discipline, respect and communication skills. He always used his coaching voice in the classroom, frequently causing teachers in nearby rooms to pause thinking he was in some sort of confrontation with a student before realizing it was just Kil talking. He stayed young as he got older due to the strong bonds he had with his children and grandchildren. He was great teacher and coach, but he was an even better father and grandfather to his kids and grandkids. His grandchildren were his pride and joy. He traveled all over the country to ensure that he was participating in every aspect of their lives. We couldn't ask for a better Patriarch for our family.

Although he was Coach Kil to many, he was a best friend and husband to Cathy and a one-of-a-kind Dad to Bobby, Brian, and Molly (and all of their friends). He was the proudest Grandpa/Popo Kil/Papa to his six incredible grandchildren. Just like he was with his kids, he was even more engaged with his grandchildren. He would drop anything at any time to talk, advise, support or most importantly, listen. His smile would light up the room every time he was with them. The only time he ever accepted losing was if he was on the opposing team to his grandkids, and even then, he wasn't all that pleased about it. "We love you, Dad. We couldn't have asked for better life with you; we only wish it could have been longer." Bobby, Brian & Molly. Coach Kil was an accomplished teacher, coach and mentor to people of all ages in his beloved Perry Township community. He's inspired generations of students and athletes during his teaching and coaching career at Perry High School. He brought out the best in people every day of his life. We can measure his accomplishments as a teacher and a coach, but what's not quantifiable is his undying love for his wife Cathy, their family and friends.

Learn many lessons from KILLER. Many about life in general from Tennis Team van rides to Federal League matches all over Stark County. He taught me a cut serve and backhand volley. We learned that tenacity and hustle can beat country club top spins and perfect backhands.
On the football field he was intense but fair.
He made all receivers meet for “breakfast” during two-a-days for just one dropped pass. Can never forget, after I scored a touchdown he let me have it. “GET EXCITED!”
We also debated about speech tournaments and why they gave trophies every week. I tried to explain that only Perry kids got trophies every week. But of course he knew that and was a big Louie fan.
Great guy. Great memories. Miss you COACH KIL.

Mr. Kilpatrick was one of my teacher’s at Edison Jr High many many years ago (I graduated from Perry in 1988). I don’t remember many of my teachers from Jr High but I sure do remember Mr. Kilpatrick. He was a great teacher. He made learning a lot of fun. I remember one of the assignments he gave us, to write a parody of a song. I still remember my parody to this day, and the picture I drew to go along with it. Thank you, Mr. Kilpatrick! Rest In Peace!

He was my 10th grade english teacher. My favorite teacher ever. We had so many great times in his class. He also taught me how to respect others. How to let go of silly things. To focus on the good. Taught me how to calm myself when I would get angry and lash out. I am 52 yrs old and I think of him often. I am so very sorry for your loss. He will be forever loved and missed.

God has gained another to His Army, he was one of my teachers. Outsiders, will forever be in my heart. He was also one of my sons teachers (25yrs apart), Bob made a promise to many as he did my son --"I will not retire until this kid has his diploma"/ and my son finally received his diploma from Bob personally.
To his family, my condolences to all of you.
RIP - "Kil" forever in my heart -----

I was fortunate to have had Coach Kilpatrick as a teacher and as one of the coaches when I played football. He was exactly what you'd expect a coach and teacher to be, and he poured everything into both jobs. He touched a lot of lives, including mine. Godspeed, Coach Kil. My condolences to his family.

Bob and I are life long friends. We grew up together, went to church together, went to school together and graduated together. He knew as a young teen that he wanted to coach and teach and what a successful Career he achieved. He will be truly missed by everyone that knew him. Rest in paradise Kil until we see each other again. Love you! ❤

Kil was a special person in both my heart and my husband's. He coached my husband in football. But what stands out the most is how he was there for our deceased daughter, Alexandra. Every 1st- 2 mods of the day when she was in high school she would go in Kil's class because he didn't have a class & Alex had study hall so he told her she could come in with him. They'd talk about everything. She loved Kil. Then she got involved in a relationship with a thug and Kil called us at home to tell us to keep Alex away from him. We believed Alex when she told us he was all straightened up. We regret that now. She knew he wasn't but Alex was always trying to help people, and I think that's what led him to this young man. She passed in 2011 in a car accident, and Kil didn't come to the calling hours, etc. We were curious about that, and I think I sent him an email, or he just sent us a card stating the reason for him not being there was because he didn't think he could see her like that. They had a special bond. I truly believe they will keep that bond in Heaven. As a younger daughter, Kil would sit with my husband and Alex & give Alex M&M's. She didn't eat them all, and when Kil asked why, she said she was saving some for her sister, Sam. And when Sam came, too, he had M&M's for them both. Everyone who knew Kil all have stories about the good things he did for them. Your life was a blessing, your memory a treasure, you are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure. Our thoughts and prayers are with all the family. Love, Randy, Sue, and Angel Alexandra Slates.

Bob was a fellow classmate and an all around good guy. He exemplified his roots as a " True Perry Panther ". Last time I saw Kil was at the reunion , we got to spend some time together and he remained an outstanding ambassador for Perry Local Schools. My condolences to Bob's family. Class of "69".
