Willie Milan Obituary

Willie Paul Milan
Willie Paul Milan, was born October 6, 1928 in Canton, OH, at the home of his maternal grandparents, Jesse and Lucy McDonald. He was the youngest of three sons born to Elise and Bonner Milan, Sr. He made his transition from Earth to Heaven on Monday, September 1, 2008 at McKinley Care Center following a lengthy illness. He attended Canton City Schools and graduated from McKinley High School. He continued his education at The Art Institute of Pittsburgh, where he earned an Associates Degree in Fashion Design; and later received a Bachelor Degree in Fashion and Millinery Design from The Art Institute of Chicago. As a young man, Willie Paul loved to swim at Jackson Pool and play tennis at Jackson Park, where he worked summers as a Playground Supervisor along with Gwen Umbles (Singleterry). Always light on his feet, Willie Paul was a great dancer, winning many dance contests in his day. Willie Paul accepted the Lord and was baptized at the age of 9 at Antioch Baptist Church, and remained a member for 70 years; where he served as Sunday School Secretary, Choir Member, Choir Director, Soloist, and on the Kitchen Committee. He shared his deep, rich singing voice at weddings, funerals, church programs, musicals, social events, and concerts for many many years. He loved music and it seemed to flow from the very core of his being. After graduating college, Willie Paul returned to Canton in 1955 to begin his career in fashion and millinery designing. He held his first Fashion Show in 1958 with seven models wearing Milan Originals. He continued his yearly Fashion Shows throughout Ohio and out-of-state venues, expanding his model base to include men, youth, and seniors. Some of whom went on to enjoy successful professional modeling careers. Willie Paul inspired, encouraged and worked closely with aspiring fashion designers, such as, Kavetta Mathis (Freese) and Curtis Strickland. Willie Paul began a second career as a Social Worker in the 1960's, working with the City of Canton Welfare Department, Stark County OEO in charge of the Northeast Center, Operation Positive Youth Summer Program, and Victory Economic Development Job Placement working with 85 youth in Alliance. Willie Paul designed a gown for the Hall of Fame Queen in the 1970's; and served as Fashion Show Coordinator for the Hall of Fame Champagne Brunch for many years, working with the visionary of that event, Cornelia Rushin. In his later years, he coordinated and commentated Fashion Shows for numerous groups and organizations. Willie Paul received many well-deserved honors, accolades and awards for community service and involvement over the years. He touched hearts, changed lives and made a positive impact in the community. Preceded him in death were his parents, Bonner Milan, Sr., Elise and Eli Sullivan; brothers, Bonner Milan, Jr. and Edward Thurston Milan; nephew, Dr. James McMillian; grandparents; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is survived by nieces, Janie (Dr. Gregory) Thomas of Pelham, NH, Brenda (Edward) Williams of Portland, OR, Georgianna Milan of Los Angeles, CA, Robin Bradford and Daphne Milan both of Canton; nephew, Edward (Diane) McMillian of Wooster, OH; sisters-in-law, Jennie Milan and Geneva Milan of Canton; God-children, Kavetta Freese of Wentzville, MO, Dr. Kimberle Williams Crenshaw of Los Angeles, CA and Joshua Brown of Wooster, OH; ten great nieces and nephews; special cousins, The Bell and Chestnut families; his "wives", Wilma Bess Lipkins, Colleen Curtis Smith, Marian Williams Crenshaw, Gwen Umbles Singleterry and Patricia Hunter; others cousins and many many friends. Truly Willie Paul will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 8, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Antioch Baptist Church, 1103 7th Street, NE, Canton, where Pastor Richard Jordan will be eulogizing. Visitation will be on Sunday, September 7, 2008 from 5-8 p.m. and on Monday from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church. Condolences may be sent to: 2515 E. Tusc. St., Canton, OH 44707.

To the Family of Mr. Willie Paul Milan
I was sadden to hear about the lost of Mr. Milan. But happy to know that he doesn't have to suffer anymore. To God be the Glory. I know that he is in a better place. But the greatest memories I will always cherish about Mr. Milan is his ability to get along with anyone he came in contact with. His smile just lit up a room and his fashion with clothes was remarkable. I can truly say he was one of a kind and I will miss him dearly. May God Bless and Keep all of the loved ones he has left behind. I understand at this time you are sadden by the lost of Mr. Milan but cherish the full life that he led.. MAY GOD BLESS AND KEEP ALL OF YOU

To the Family of Mr. Willie Milan,
May GOD grant you peace during this time of grievance for the lost of such a legendary, unique and compassionate person. Willie Paul's life was full of love, excitement, innovation, and accomplishments. He was always busy finding new and unique was to accomplish new things. He always thought outside of the box, making everyone wonder what he would come up with next. This was not only displayed in his clothing designs, but also in the way he lived his life. His smile would bring you from tears into laughter. His lessons would leave you always thinking and wondering if what you got from them is what he meant. No matter where you seen him or whom you seen him with, he would still greet you with geniuness. There was NOTHING phony about him. The thing that I will miss the most is how he called me LUV. I felt it was a special name he had for me because he said it so compassionately. Of course I found out later that he had a few LUVs (smile) But that was ok by me. Paul knew that he was a special man and loved by many. He will be greatly missed, however his styles and voice will be forever remembered. GOD Bless his soul and Let's all pray that he his granted a place in GOD"S paradise.

I wish I could have been in Canton today for Willie Paul. I wish I could have had one more time just to see that smile and feel the "glow" that being with him always brought me. I worked with him in the 70's at Jackson Sherrick Homes, and the friendship "stuck" with us. He was not just "anybody". He was exceptional in every way I can think of from his warm and gracious manner to his deep love and care of so many people in the community. He laughed and made us laugh, when things got rough, he kept us going somehow. When there was work to do he always did more than his share, and when you became his friend God smiled on you. I will miss everything about him that I knew, and I know that when it is my time, I will be looking for this man who has made himself unforgettable to so many of us. I remember his "wives" and I remember the stories he and they would tell down in the Community Action "office" at Jackson Sherrick. He almost always had fabric, a needle and thread busy in his hands when he talked. I can still see him waltzing across the floor with some of them at the parties, weddings and social events I was lucky enough to be invited to. I can almost smell and taste his "one and only' pound cake, and I still cherish the memories of the Holiday meals we all cooked together for the Senior Citizens of the neighborhood. The shopping trips together to buy the turkeys and the trimmings were an experience that could make a sitcom, and the planning meetings with Joe Smith and Joan Gillespie always provided us with the help we needed to make it happen. Paul was the man who could charm anyone into doing what needed to be done, and if all else failed: well "peasants" you all know how effective that word was in getting us moving the way he wanted us to go. It was a privilege to know him and I am thankful that God planted me in that place at that time. Those were some of the happiest years of my life.

How he love to use the word "Pleasant" in his fugure of speech. The numerous lives that he infected with his bigger than life personality. Willie Paul will be missed, but his warm wonderful memories will live on in all of our lives. Prayer and strong thoughts to the the family at this time. To the Family and "Wives" of Willie Paul Milan:

I was extremely sadened by the news of the passing of Willie Paul. I loved the way he encouraged the youth that they could do anything -- I should know, because I was one of those youth he encouraged. Having two left feet, he taught me to waltz for the Cotillion, he gave me courage to walk the runway for the Annual Hall of Fame Fashion Show/Brunch. His kind words in years past gave me encouragement.

Rest, my dear friend, rest. I will miss you. Until we meet again.

To All the Family, Friends & "Peasants" of Willie Paul "The Godfather of Fashion" Milan;

As I sit here wiping tears away, I am so honored to have been blessed by Willie Paul. When I first met him i just wanted to be around him because he had such a loving spirit and he seemed like he was the "life of the party".

Since then I have been blessed to have been mentored by him, have clothes designed by him, sing with him, eat his good cooking and just be happy to be called one of his "Peasants" (his pet name if he liked you). He is one of the few people that I have NEVER heard no one say one bad thing about, everyone loved Willie Paul.

I am upset that I won't be able to attend his homegoing service, BUT I am so happy that God placed someone like him in my life to be a blessing to me and so many others!

May God bless you all and may Heaven know that they have truly received a loving, spiritual, kind hearted, fashionable Angel. You will truly be missed Willie Paul!!!!!!

God Bless,

My condolences to the family and many Great friends of Willie Paul. I am blessed to have had Willie Paul as a neighbor of mine. I am also blessed to have attended the same church as Willie Paul. I can truly say he was world class in everything he did, singing at weddings and directing them. Willie Paul fashions shows were awesome and done with the class of royalty. Willie Paul always put back in the community with being invovled on many levels and with many different organizations. This classy man has truly been a "hero" for others to imitate and follow. Canton has lost Royalty in Willie Paul Milan, he has transferred to the "Kingom of the true KING of KINGS and the Lord of Lords." Willie Paul just copied how God wants all of us to live, be like and dress like Children of the King.
What an awesome memory I shall always cherish of Willie Paul Milan we will see him on the other side with our Father God in Heaven. Willie Paul Milan, Rest, you gave and gave your best.

I just want each and every one of you to know that Willlie Paul was someone very special. Not only to his family but also to the City of Canton and the community. He had a way about him that became infectious to you when you were in his presence. He was a lot of fun to be around. He, Thurston, and I sang together years ago in the Urban League Choir. That's when I found out how much fun he really was. So family, just know that the good Lord needed another good voice to go along with Isaac Hayes and he called for Willie Paul. May God continue to bless each of you, and you have my prayers and deepest sympathy.

Much love from a former Cantonian,

Larry & Peggy Wade
