An appreciation.
Leadership is influence nothing more or less.
My perspective is from being part of a rotating team of people who sailed with him. His quiet authority was an organized mind who knew the strengths of his crew and allowed them them to both rise to the occasion and to help each other in their growth. He knew that the power of a great team was the strength of the bench.
My time spent converted me to the joys of "Big Boat" sailing and influenced me on my further studies of coaching, leadership and team work.
There will be stories, mine is as a newcomer on the rail of a Wednesday Night. Hearing a strange sound from the back of the boat. I asked Mimi if she recognized this...
"Ben is humming. He does that when he is happy."
Sailing with Mr Michaelson it was our collective job to keep him humming behind the wheel on races short and long.
His legacy is not just that nice guys finish first, but those under his influence have gone on to flourish in the same manner shown.
Thank you Sir.
Respectfully
Bary B. Gately
