Charles George Smith "C.G.",99, passed from this earth to his forever home on May 17, 2018. Born in Bayonne, New Jersey on November 19, 1918 to the late Charles G. Smith, Sr. and Clara Smith (Schaller). Charles' early life was spent in New Orleans, LA; Brooklyn, NY; and Belfast, ME. In 1940, C.G. entered the United States Navy. He completed his basic training in San Diego, CA. He was stationed aboard the USS Gamble in Pearl Harbor. On December 7, 1941, C.G. was aboard the USS Gamble when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. For the next 2 years, he served on the USS Gamble, a mine layer, throughout the South Pacific. In 1944, he was transferred to Washington D.C. Department of the Navy. In 1947, C.G. met Bea Novosel, and they married in 1948. By 1954, they had 5 children and C.G. decided to leave the Navy and settle in Annapolis, MD. C.G. went to night school in Baltimore where he attained his degree in accounting. He then became employed with Anne Arundel County as the comptroller for the county's Finance Department. In 1964, C.G. and Bea bought what is now the River Bay Road House and Bella's Liquors. He retired from the county after 30 years of service. C.G. was an astute business man. He loved music, his devoted dogs and horses. He owned and raced several horses with Country Life Farm Stables. In 1996, he established the Bella's SADD $1,000 scholarship for Broadneck High School. He also contributed to various charities and sports activities around the community. C.G. was preceded in death by his daughter, Susan Smith; son, Charles G. Smith, III; and his great-granddaughter Erin Lee Sullivan. He is survived by his love of 33 years, Anne Sieg and his three daughters, Valerie Sullivan, Christine Taylor, and Denise Davisson. Lovingly called Pops, he has 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. He lived an amazing life in his 99.5 years. We will always remember his wit, humor and no-nonsense business attitude. CG,
Thank you for the wonderful life long memories!
Anchored on the Chris-Craft on the Severn River in front of the Naval Academy, watching the Blue Angels streak the river overhead in the bright blue sky.
June 12 2004-Orioles vs Pirates-Rafael Palmeiro/Barry Bonds slug fest with my nephew.
The gift of the flag pole for the dream home which I proudly planted was an honor and greatly appreciated.
Most of all, I salute you and Thank You for your service to this great country.
To your family, my respectful heartfelt condolences. It was an absolute honor to have known CG.
