D. Matthew Cole Obituary

June 27, 1955 to July 1, 2024 Matt was born and raised in Annapolis, Maryland; the second son of J. Owen Cole (deceased) and Katherine (Davidson) Cole. Matt married Frances Wilson in 1986 and he was a loving and devoted husband for the past 38 years. Matt was the founder and owner of Cole Ventures, Inc., a construction and excavation company, incorporated in 1984. For the past 40 years Cole Ventures has continued to grow and contribute to the community. Matt was recognized and admired by all who knew him as a man of integrity in both business and his personal life. He loved to work and preferred to be in a machine, rather than in the office. He was a Ducks Unlimited Life Sponsor and served on the Maryland Wildlife Advisory Commission. Matt was a visionary and was committed to transforming the physical world around him. This passion began with his Grandfather's (Bill Davidson) WWII surplus bulldozer. By the time Matt graduated from the Severn School in 1973, he knew that he wanted to be outdoors and work with his hands and so began his venture into construction. Matt had a close relationship with his father who spent many a Sunday enjoying lunch with Matt and his crew. Matt frequently said that his business principle of "do what you say you're going to do, and do it right", was inspired by his Dad's profound influence. Matt enjoyed hunting and boating on the Chesapeake Bay, especially in his younger years. He also was well-known for hosting an annual event called the "Cole Ventures Wild Game Feast" for 25 years, which is still fondly remembered by attendees today. Matt and Frances spent weekends and holidays at their farm in Snow Hill, Maryland, where they made many good friends. The farm was his favorite place on earth, where he loved to work on his many projects and to entertain friends and family. Once on the farm, Matt rarely left except to visit his favorite sushi chef/owner Yama at CoCoLo Sushi. Matt had a deep love for his extended family and his work family. He was always willing to help when needed and extend an opportunity to anyone willing to work hard and be reliable. Matt is survived by his wife, Frances, his mother, Kate, his brothers: Mark (Karen), Chap (Pam), Ben, Owen (Joy), his sister, Molly (Chocky), many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and devoted employees. He is predeceased by his Father, Owen, in 2005 and his brother, Jamie, in 2022. A Visitation Remembrance will be held on July 18th, from 4-7:00pm, at the Hyatt Place, Kent Narrows, Md. A private memorial service will take place at a later date.

My Uncle Matt gave me my first ride in a dump truck when I was four or five year old. From the time I was 10 years old I would go to Maine in the summer to spend time with my grandparents and at least 2 of those trips I made with Uncle Matt and his golden retrievers. A few years later, when I had my pony we had a blizzard. It was Uncle Matt in his bobcat who dug out the path to the barn and an area around it for my pony. Many years later Uncle Matt and Aunt Francie hosted my wedding at their farm in Snow Hill. Uncle Matt worked tirelessly to help turn it into my dream wedding. He and my Aunt Francie have always been special to me. So much so that it was fitting to name our second daughter, Mattie Frances.
I still cannot believe that he is gone. There are no words to describe this feeling of loss. I take some comfort in the thought that he is keeping Grandma and Uncle Jamie and Papa company in Heaven until the day we all are together again.

You and Matt were such a bright light for me during such a dark time in my life. I always knew if I needed anything you guys were there to help, give wise advice, put a smile on my face or just simply listen. You supported me! Not just my business but ME! I´m so lucky to have the memories of Matt always meeting me at your back door with one of his big bear hugs with a corona in hand (always), late night gator rides, dancing in your living room or just simply popping his head into the salon just to say hi. You guys were a very important part of my life! What you and Matt had, is hard to come by. He was a first class gentleman!

This saddens the heart on so many levels .
Having Matt as a friend was like living in a great novel . We had adventures with him and Frances on the farm for so many years . Running around on 4 wheelers through puddles and trees with the kids on board . And the next chapter we would be in a romantic restaurant sharing good times drinking fine wine .
My favorite chapter was walking through the beautiful gardens build of flowers and huge stones Structures That he built with pride .
The cool fall days Sipping more fine wine on the front porch sharing time with their many Snowhill friends.
An old farm house transformed into a piece of paradise that they loved shared .
So many are a part of his story . And . I feel very privileged to be one of the characters that made it into the life of Matt Cole .

Wow, so very sorry. Unfortunately, I saw Matt's obituary when I was working on posting one for my husband, Tracy Jones/Westwind Homes. Tracy, Linda and I thought very highly of Matt.

To have the privilege of knowing Matt for decades is truly an honor and a blessing. There´s very few people that have made such a positive impact in my lifetime. Memories are forever!
* There sure will be one heck of a Game Feast in Heaven this Fall!
