David Shineman Obituary

1945 to 2024 David was raised in Canajoharie, NY by his wonderful parents, the late Alice and Everett Shineman. He had recently retired to Bluffton, SC after living in Annapolis for over forty-five years.  His youth was spent full of friends, activities, sports and much more.  During this time, he became the then-youngest recipient of a New York State Ham Radio License.  K2RUD were his call letters. He made his own equipment and would talk to other "Hams" around the world at all hours of the day and night.  This technical ability served him well, when years later he created a network and "patched" his family's phones together to communicate weekly - whilst living aboard Figaro IV in the Caribbean and elsewhere. He became a licensed private pilot and continued his entrepreneurial vocations and avocations, which usually were marine-related. In the Summer of 1966, he met and -a year later- married his wife of fifty-seven years, Ernestine "Ernie" Shineman.  He is survived by Ernie and two sons: David II "Skip" (Sandi), of Bluffton, SC; Scott (Julie) of Harwood, MD and their daughters, Charlotte and Josephine. There was never a prouder father, father-in-law or grandfather.  He is also survived by nieces: Sarah Lewis of Albany NY, Julie Bucciarelli of Meredith NH, Amy Hawkins of Weymouth MA, and Lisa Taylor (Brad) of Hingham MA; and nephews: Evan Lewis (Heather) of Seattle WA, John Hawkins of Pembroke MA and Ricky Hawkins of Boston MA. After his graduation from Syracuse University (which was attended by both of his then-young sons), his first-and-only "major" corporate-job awaited.  He worked for Honeywell, where his Ham-radio experience proved to be an asset. It wasn't long before he received his first notice of transfer. Destination: Salt Lake City.  Realizing that this was the beginning of "The Corporate Life", he declined the transfer and resigned.  He and Ernie sold the house and put aside most of their possessions (either in storage or with family). They bought a sailboat, Figaro, which David delivered from Bob Derecktor's Boatyard in Mamaroneck, NY via New York's canal system, to Shumway Marina in Rochester, NY.  Objective: to be fit out for liveaboard and to be child proofed. Skip was two-and-a-half & Scott was six months old.  David's parents and in-laws initially questioned his sanity, but soon came to believe that the World was in fact round, not flat. Likely, the weekly check-in calls helped. A Festive Celebration of David's Life will be held at 4:00 PM Fri June 14 th at the new Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB) / Annapolis Adaptive Boating Center at 7040 Bembe Beach Road, Annapolis, MD 21403.  In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made by mailing your donation to Chesapeake Region Accessible Boating (CRAB) at this address, or by online contribution at www.crabsailing.org.

I am so very sorry to read of Dave´s passing. As a teenager spending Summers boating on Lake Ontario, I remember him as a kind, sharing, and very enthusiastic man, with a real love of family- and sailing adventure. I recall one time spending the night with the boats anchored in the lee of Little Galoo island, and scrambling early in the morning only to find out later that the cause of the wet pilot berth was not Ernestine´s water breaking, but a leaky midship cleat. Dave shone brightly and was a positive influence in my young life. My condolences to you Ernie and to your family.

So sad to hear the news of Mr. Shineman´s passing. As I told Skip, I hold the memories of the summer I spent with you all on the Eastern Shore very close to my heart. Sending love to all of you.
