Dorothy, "Dottie", Lee Smith passed away peacefully on October 4th, 2023, at the age of 92, from Alzheimer's dementia, while in memory and hospice care at Sunrise of Severna Park. Dottie was born an identical twin to her dear parents Joseph Paul and Marie Hall Smith on March 27,1941, in
Washington, D.C., and raised later at her beloved and historical "Hazel wood", in
Upper Marlboro, Maryland. In her youth, she excelled in Classical Music (piano) and History of Art at Holton-Arms Junior College for girls of
Washington, D.C.. Widow of Lt. Col. Rodney C. Smith and mother of Corinne Smith Bergstrom and deceased son, Rodney Paul Smith, Dottie was a devoted wife and mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and great-aunt who also served in many capacities on various community organizations: The Order of the Eastern Star; Women's Club of Annapolis (President); Annapolis Symphony Orchestra and Annapolis Fine Arts Festival committees; St. Anne's Parish; Daughters of the American Revolution ( past Regent); Colonial Dames of America; and The Meadows Garden Club (president). Dottie possessed a keen interest and knowledge of American colonial history and architecture and was a volunteer and docent for the Hammond-Harwood House of Annapolis and Historic Annapolis Tours. Later in her life, she devoted her energies to the establishment of the Hazelwood Manor Preservation Society, Inc. and Friends of Hazelwood in conjunction with the Commission of Prince George's County and the Maryland Historical Trust. Dorothy will be remembered for her lively strong character as well as her artistic flair and wonderful culinary talents that she presented regularly in her beautiful home for all her loved ones to enjoy. She is survived by her daughter, Corinne; grandchildren, John, Caitlin and Anne; granddaughter Sequoia; sister-in-law Jean Smith and numerous nieces and nephews, with special closeness to her identical twin's children, Amanda Steeves, Calvin and Suzanne Fluharty. During the past year, Dottie often expressed her desire to join her sorely missed deceased husband and family members to "have a big party together again". May her wish be granted and may she rest in peace eternally. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the Chesapeake. A celebration of life for both Dottie and Rod following the interment of their ashes at St. Anne's Cemetery will be announced at a later date.
