Admiral Waller was our Sope at USNA. He gave me a 2nd Chance at an Academic Board in 1983. (I had spent 2 weeks at Bethesda Navy Hospital and missed 2 weeks of classes). He told me that I would be taking Summer school, and that he never wanted to see me in his office again. I am very appreciative of this man's fairness and kindness to me. (And, I was never in his office again).
P.S. I was a reader at the USNA Chapel. We attended Catholic Mass together. I always relished the opportunity to read in church while Admiral Waller sat on the front pew with his family. I felt that it was a very unique opportunity for a lowly Midshipman like myself to (almost) preach to a Vice-Admiral. We were also both NAPSTERS!

My condolences to the entire Waller family. VADM Waller was a legend in the P-3 community. I was roommates with his son, Ed, at the Naval Academy. Ed kept a framed photo of his Dad on his desk. Whenever our room was inspected, the first thing the inspector saw was that photo. “Oh, you’re Dad’s an Admiral. Well, this room passes.” Later, when he was stationed in the DC area, the admiral would quietly slip into wardroom to eat with us. I had some great conversations with him about Naval Aviation. Farewell and following seas, sir.
