Ervin Pettersen Obituary

Ervin Ebne Pettersen of Radford, VA died at home with his wife and family at his side on March 15 after a lengthy illness. Erv was 76 years old. Erv was born in Haugesund, Norway on March 13, 1944 and immigrated with his parents and sister to the United States in 1951, settling in Eastport, Annapolis MD where he spent the remainder of his childhood. He spent much of his early and mid-adult life in Annapolis where he and his wife Mary Jane raised their family. Erv was a basketball standout at Annapolis High School and after graduation went on to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) as part of the engineering Co-Op program between Tech and the former Annapolis Experimental Station and David Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center. He graduated with a degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1966. While at Virginia Tech, he met the love of his life and wife, Mary Jane Hill, of Norton, VA who was attending Radford College. They have been married for 53 years, raised two children, and spent time living in Annapolis, Dataw Island, SC, Crystal City, VA, and then on to his retirement living in Radford, VA. Upon graduation Erv began his career as a Naval Engineer first performing as a test engineer and then achieving Branch Head and ultimately Division Head positions in the world renowned U.S Navy Submarine Fleet Silencing Program, a program that has been singled out and highly recognized as being a key program directly responsible for winning the Cold War. He received numerous commendations and recognition from up to and including the President of the United States for his and his team's efforts. These acoustic advances enabled the U. S. Navy Submarine fleet to become the most technologically advanced fleet in the world. Erv worked for DTNSRDC Annapolis and Carderock, the Naval Sea Systems Command, and for also for Anteon Corp. after his federal retirement. He retired from federal service in 1999, serving 37 years as a distinguished federal employee. Erv enjoyed most being with his family at home, at the beach, boating, fishing or crabbing on the Chesapeake, and playing sports. During his career, Erv was able to balance work and sports, playing softball and basketball on work and city league teams with his son, brother, and brother-in-law, and many good friends. He also enjoyed many organized running events such as the Annapolis Ten Mile Run and the Bay Bridge Run. Some of the best family times were spent on the front porch of his parents' home on Boucher Ave. in Annapolis for Friday night dinners and refreshments, and Erv particularly enjoyed Norwegian Christmas Eve traditions and Thanksgiving festivities with his family. Erv was passionate about and became a dedicated supporter of VT sports, his beloved Hokies, and the school itself. He spent numerous weekends with friends and family enjoying Tech games as a season ticket holder. Friends and family would arrive at his home and enjoy many festive fall football weekends over the years. Erv was predeceased by his parents, Ingvald T. Pettersen in 1988 and Johanna E. Pettersen in 2009. Erv is survived by the love of his life, Mary Jane Pettersen of Radford VA, whom he married in 1966 in Blacksburg, VA on the day of his Virginia Tech graduation. They were married for nearly 54 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son Brian Pettersen of Raleigh, NC, and his daughter Kristen Pettersen Morrison and husband Matthew of Nashville TN; grandchildren Brendan Jackson, Anne Claire Jackson, and Brooks Morrison of Nashville, TN; sister Linda Schultz and husband Larry of Centreville, MD; and brother Kenneth Pettersen and wife Janet of Lusby, MD. Erv is survived by numerous loving nieces, nephews, and cousins. A memorial service will be held in both Radford and Annapolis at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Good Samaritan Hospice of Christiansburg VA or the National Alzheimer's Association (alz.org). The Pettersen family is in the care of Mullins Funeral Home & Crematory in Radford, Virginia. www.mullinsfuneralhome.com.

Ervin was my life long friend. We met when we were both 10 in little league playing on different teams. We played together in baseball and basketball all the way thru Annapolis High School. He was always a great team mate and friend. Ervin lead a great life with a wonderful marriage, career, and family. He was a humble man who always thought of others and was always a friend you could count on. I will remember him fondly till we meet again.

Erv was a wonderful boss, mentor and all around good man. I worked with him at NSWC and he was always supportive and understanding. He understood the balance of working full time and raising a family. If you needed to be off from work for a family or medical issue - no questions asked - he wanted you to go be with your family. They came first. Mary Jane and family please accept our heartfelt sympathy. Our thoughts and prayers are with.

Erv was always the consummate professional, treating both his peers and subordinates with respect and kindness. He was an intelligent innovative engineer who contributed advancing silencing technologies in a resourceful way. He was a pleasure to work with and to be around. I always enjoyed socializing with he and Mary Jane and when my wife dies he was a comfort. He shall be missed but never forgotten.

Erv Pettersen exemplified kindness, respect, and character. I was privileged to work with him for several years at Anteon, and benefited mightily from his professional expertise, and the camaraderie that he created with virtually everyone he ever met. Most of all, he was just a wonderful person who was loved by all. Mary Jane, I send my deepest condolences to you and your family, and wishes for your wonderful memories with Erv to sustain you through this time.

Mrs. Pettersen and Family. As a kid, I spent a lot of time running around your house, swimming in your pool, eating your food, and generally, engaging in all types of kid-related mayhem. Yours was the first house I knew that had cable tv and later an Atari system. You and Mr. Pettersen were always there to keep us in line. You were great neighbors. Belated thank you and sorry for your loss.

Erv played right field in baseball our freshman year at Va. tech and I was the center fielder. We played on the intramural softball team and our team won the intramural championship. We double dated a couple of times together, had many classes together as coop students, and were very good friends. Frank Hart, a friend of ours, just called me to let me know of Erv's death. I am saddened to learn about his passing and my prayers are with his family. His friend, Frank Moore

Carol and I reach out to Mary Jane and the Pettersen family during this loss of a good friend. Erv lived the good life that make us remember him as that kind and gentle person who involves others and helps carry them.

I met Erv at Virginia Tech in the fall of 1962. A group of us from a freshman mathematics class formed a competitive intramural football team; he was a fierce competitor and caused others to enjoy results. Members of that team competed in almost all intramural sports competitions for the next three years; he expected a give it your all effort. Basketball, softball, football, track, volleyball, and gymnastics. We lost Erv to the VT baseball team that spring; we won the volleyball championship with one great Iranian volleyball player, Erv, and us. His love to compete carried into academics where he excelled in mechanical engineering.

Most members of this group were co-op students, spending a quarter in industry and a quarter in school to pay for education. His results behavior made him a great employee as a co-op. The importance of teaming must have arrived from family genes. Industry benefits from teaming. If you were around Erv, you teamed.

As friends, I visited with Erv and his family in Annapolis, and he visited with my family in Wise. We felt comfortable and welcome with both visits. His family offered so much hospitality.

Mary Jane and Carol found Erv and me on the Radford University campus on separate occasions. Mary Jane and Carol graduated from the same high school. By graduation from VT, marriage happened. Erv and I needed to shift our lives from sports and academics to marriage and family relations. Erv, the gentle man, cooperated with Mary Jane in this endeavor that lasted more than 53 years. I appreciate his care for her and her care for him.

Erv is missed.

Always enjoyed working for Erv at Annapolis and later at Carderock. He was an excellent leader of a large technical team. He was a fierce competitor on the softball field and racquetball court. He will be missed.
