Eugene Walp Obituary

Eugene "Pop" Bayard Walp Sr. 82, of Annapolis and Avon Park, Fla., died Jan. 16 after a brief illness.

Mr. Walp was born Sept. 4, 1926, in Bridgeton, N.J. He graduated from Metuchen High School in N.J.

He retired after 20 years with GM and also worked for 20 years with NSRD (North Severn) as a research laboratory mechanic. He owned Limited Auto and Marine Repair in Annapolis, and was a teacher at the Manpower Training Center for the federal government in Annapolis.

He served as a chief petty officer in the Navy from 1943-47 during WWII, and later in the Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict from 1950-51. He was decorated with numerous medals during his military career.

He was a member of the Fleet Reserve Association, Marine Corps League, Crownsville American Legion Post 226, National Order of "Trench Rats" (which is an affiliate of the D.A.V.), and was a past commander of both VFW Post 304 and the L.L. Merrill Chapter of the D.A.V., both in Annapolis

He was an avid bass fisherman and horseshoe player. He enjoyed family gatherings and loved
his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Ellen Walp, who died in 1992; one daughter, Christine A. Garris; and one brother, Andrew Walp.

Survivors include five sons, Melvin Ehrhardt Walp of Utah, Gary R. and Eugene B. Walp Jr., both of Annapolis, Mark A. Walp of Davidsonville and Brian M. Walp of Prince Frederick; two daughters, Linda M. McCarty of N.C. and Sheri A. Miller of Annapolis, two brothers, Thomas Walp of Calif. and Donald Walp of N.Y.; companion LaVerne Cammarata of Annapolis; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Family and friends are invited to a celebration of his life from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 21 at George P. Kalas Funeral Home, 2973 Solomons Island Road, Edgewater. A graveside service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Maryland Veterans Cemetery in Crownsville.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1041 Route 3 N Bldg A, Gambrills, MD 21054.
