Frederic Hickman Obituary

HICKMAN, FREDERIC T., A memorial service and celebration of the life of Frederic T. ("Fred") Hickman of Hillsmere Shores, a piano technician and water-sports enthusiast, will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, December 1, at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis.

Fred was 59 when he passed away at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore on November 2 from brain injuries suffered in a fall a few days earlier.

This son of the late Robert and Margaret Hickman of Arnold was born in Annapolis on March 26, 1953. He graduated from Severna Park High School, received training from the Aubrey Willis School of Piano Tuning and Repairing, and resided in the Annapolis area nearly all of his life.

A registered craftsman of the Piano Technicians Guild for more than 25 years, Fred had served as vice president and president of its Baltimore chapter. He tuned pianos for an array of classical and jazz pianists, including George Winston, Dr. John, and Paul Winter. Fred was also a guiding light of the 'Send A Piana To Havana' non-profit organization that exported pianos to Cuban schools; he then traveled to Cuba to prepare and distribute those pianos.

Fred was a licensed boat captain and airplane pilot, an avid sailor and water skier, and traveled throughout the Caribbean, as well as to New Zealand and Palau, to follow his special passion for scuba diving.

He is survived by one brother, R. Edward Hickman of Ambler, PA; two nephews, Thomas K. Hickman of Frisco, TX, and David A. Hickman of Lewisburg, TN; and two sisters-in-law, Ellen Hickman of Ambler, PA, and Luta Hickman of Centreville, VA.  He was preceded in death by a second brother, James R. Hickman of Centreville, VA.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to one of the following charities: Creating Communities, The Chesapeake Bay Foundation, or Heifer International.

Fred's friend Nancy Wallace read this quote recently -- I loved it!

I want to leave you something better than words or sounds, look for me in the people I've know or loved. Let me live in your eyes and not just in your mind. You can love me best by letting hands touch hands. Love doesn't die, people do.

So, when all that is left of me is love…give me away

What a loss. Fred was one of the most kind and humble members of the Annapolis music scene. He will be missed, but often remembered.
